CCAA announces 2nd round of successful candidates of Female Coach Mentor Program
Cornwall, Ont. - Celebrating success in its first season of existence, the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association is pleased to announce this year's successful applicants of its Female Coach Mentor Program. In its second year, the CCAA is delighted to offer this unique opportunity to 14 applicant institutions, an increase from last year's 10 selected applicants. Champlain St. Lawrence College's Women's Basketball Program Apprentice Coach Melissa Breton – Melissa played 3 years with the Champlain St. Lawrence AAA Lady Lions and played another 3 years while studying at the University of Prince Edward Island. Throughout the years, Melissa mastered her technical skills and gained a better understanding of the mental aspect of performance. As she strives to further grow as a coach, she looks forward to sharing the knowledge and experience she has acquired in hopes to help young players improve their game and enable them to reach their potential both as athletes and individuals. Melissa's coaching experience involves St. Lawrence Lions Summer Basketball Camps (entering her 8th year), St-Vincent Elementary A and AA boys teams, St-Patrick's High School Junior and Senior girls, as well as several different groups of young girls who, while not part of a team, want to learn how to play basketball. Mentor Coach Mike Labadie – While he has been teaching Physical Education at Champlain St. Lawrence since 1981, Mike has been the Head Coach of the Lady Blues for the past two years. Actively involved with coaching since 1981, he also has enjoyed working and teaching student-athletes at Champlain, and played an active role in the implementation of new sports programs and fitness centre at the institution. Mike has attended numerous coaching clinics and professional development seminars in an effort to stay abreast and current with new developments and trends in sport. Certified Level II, Mike is the founder to the St. Lawrence Lions Summer Basketball Camps which is now in its 10th year. University College of the Fraser Valley's (UCFV) Women's Volleyball Program Apprentice Coach Rebecca VanderMey – Playing volleyball since grade 7, Rebecca was a member of the Cascades from 2003-2005. Rebecca is eager to dedicate her time and support the team both emotionally and physically, while also learning more on how to be a coach and a team player. She has had experience as a leader at youth summer camps. Mentor Coach Bob Yuen – NCCP Certified Level III, Bob has been the Head Coach of the UCFV Cascades Women's Volleyball team since 2004. Over the past 10 years, he has mentored many upcoming male and female coaches at the high school and club levels. Recognizing the lack of female coaching influence, Bob is excited to take his mentoring to the college level and looks forward to further contributing to the development of female coaches Collège François-Xavier-Garneau's Women's Volleyball Program Apprentice Coach Mélissa Pelletier – A former member of the Élans' Women's Volleyball squad from 1993 to 1999, Mélissa pursued her education at Laval University where she played for another four years. Throughout the years, she has gained great respect for those who supported her and appreciates the efforts and guidance provided. Mélissa has always been heavily involved in volleyball. Last season, she was selected as Assistant Coach for the Élans. Prior to this, she was an assistant coach for a mini-volleyball team, an instructor for Laval University Summer Camps and assistant coach for Volleyball Québec Summer Camps. While she wants to pass on her skills and knowlege to the athletes, Mélissa also feels this experience will allow her to further grow professionally and develop personally. Mentor Coach Julien Paquette – NCCP Certified Level III, Julien has been involved in women's volleyball for many years now. For the past 11 years, he has assumed the role of Assistant Coach for the Collège Montmorency Nomades, the University of Montreal Carabins and the Espoir of Rosemère. He also took on the role of Head Coach for Laval and Laurentides Volleyball Centre, Vipères des Laurentides, Québec Élite Team as well as the Team representing Canada at the U-21 Beach Volleyball World Championships. Julien believes that while it is important to develop successful athletes, it is also fundamental to develop high standard, qualified coaches and he looks forward to being a part of the CCAA Female Coach Mentor Program. Seneca College's Women's Basketball Program Apprentice Coach Lisa Best – Co-captain in the last 2 of 4 years with the Seneca Sting Women's Varsity Basketball team, Lisa was given the opportunity to grow both as a player and a leader. Previous to her tenure at Seneca College, she worked and volunteered at summer camps and after-school programs for children aged 3-12. While in the CCAA Female Coach Mentor Program, Lisa hopes to use what she has learned both as a player and a volunteer, but also recognizes that the best way to learn and develop your skills as a coach is to do essentially what a coach does. Whether it be attending every practice/game/tournament, helping to develop certain skills, doing administrative work, motivating the team, encouraging the individual players or simply keeping a positive outlook, Lisa feels it is time to pass on the same knowledge, skill and determination she received over the years. Mentor Coach Marcy Skribe – A Certified Level I coach, Marcy is currently completing her Level II Certification. A Durham College and Seneca College graduate, her coaching experiences includes Assistant Coach at Durham from 1999-2001, Assistant Coach at Seneca from 2002-2005 and she recently became Head Coach in 2005. A former basketball and soccer player in the OCAA, Marcy has seen the league grow tremendously over the past 10 years. She has been fortunate to experience a great deal due to the willingness of others to give their time, share their knowledge and provide guidance. As a mentor coach, Marcy would like to give back in honour of all those that did so much for her. She feels that this is a great opportunity for a former student-athlete to begin the initial stages of coaching, while also allowing her to show them the ropes and continue to help them develop their game at a new level. The King's University College's (TKUC) Women's Basketball Program Apprentice Coach Christie Darius – A former member of the TKUC Eagles from 2001-2004, Christie was named team MVP, two-time Conference All Star and captain in her final season. Upon graduating, she transferred to Saint Mary's University where she played two more seasons and was awarded an Atlantic University Sport silver medal. Playing at a post-secondary level under the leadership and guidance of two excellent female coaches, Christie recognized the importance of women in coaching and their role in the lives of their athletes. While at Saint-Mary's, she coached a competitive spring league made up of mini, bantam and midget level teams, as well as the summer Camp of Champions geared to athletes' aged 6 to 17. Christie also coached competitive spring leagues and camps while attending high school. In addition to coaching, she has taken several coaching-related courses throughout university. Participating in this program will further enable Christie to reach her goals of becoming a post-secondary Head Coach. She plans on completing her NCCP Levels I and II Certification over the next year, begin her Level III in 2008 and later pursue graduate studies in coaching in 2010. Mentor Coach Patrick Sullivan – Playing organized basketball since 1979, Patrick has been coaching since 1999 and joined the TKUC Eagles coaching staff in 2004. His coaching experience includes the University of Saskatchewan, Canadian Forces Base Edmonton as well as developing high school athletes. A Certified Level III coach, Patrick will use this opportunity to give back to all the coaches and mentors who've helped him become a better athlete, person and coach. Recognizing the need for more female coaches in the ACAC, Patrick feels fortunate to obtain Christie's services and have a role in developing her coaching career. Grande Prairie Regional College's (GPRC) Women's Volleyball Program Apprentice Coach Amanda Zahara – A former member of the GPRC Volleyball Program, Amanda has set her sights on coaching. Amanda has always participated in sport and physical activity throughout her life; played 3 years for the Sexsmith Sabres volleyball team, was member of various Wolves Volleyball Club teams throughout junior high and high school, played 2 years with the GPRC Wolves volleyball team, and played 3 years of collegiate softball at Oklahoma Baptist University. During this time, Amanda has acquired many interpersonal, leadership and physical skills which she hopes to transfer and share with future athletes. Bringing encouragement and support to the Wolves Women's Volleyball Program, Amanda will endeavour to provide guidance and help each individual strive to reach their full potential as student-athletes, while also being a positive role model for the young women. Mentor Coach Grace Scott - Committed to the development of both her athletes and coaching staff, Grace believes mentoring is an excellent means to develop future leaders, while also helping people grow in character and learn new skills. Certified Level III, while she has only been the Head Coach of the GPRC Women's Volleyball Program since 2005, Grace has been heavily involved in the Wolves U16 Volleyball Club Program; she has been their Head Coach since 1997 and has led them to numerous gold titles. Grace is driven by her desire to share the knowledge and skills that she has learned with others, while also enabling them to be successful both as a coach and as a person. Capilano College's Women's Volleyball Program Apprentice Coach Kara Loy – Developing a love for volleyball at a very early age, Kara played throughout both elementary and high school prior to playing with the Capilano College Women's Volleyball team; she played three (3) years with the Blues and captained the team for two (2) of those years. Kara's first volunteer coach position was teaching grade seven students the basics skills of volleyball at the Lynn Valley Elementary School. After pursuing her education at West College of Massage Therapy, Kara dedicated her time to the Capilano College Woman's Volleyball Program, acting as a trainer and working closely with the players during games and/or practices. While she aspires to become a Sports Massage Therapist and seeks her NCCP certification, Kara wishes to assist the Head Coach in developing strong team dynamics while also instilling what she has learned as a collegiate volleyball player. Mentor Coach Wayne Desjardins – A Certified Level II Volleyball coach, Wayne is currently seeking his Level III as he enters his eight season as Head Coach with the Capilano College Women's Volleyball Program. With over 29 years of experience in Physical Education as a coach, athletic director and teacher, he has attained tremendous skills, knowledge and experiences. Recognizing that there exists few opportunities for female coaches, Wayne is eager to support the CCAA Female Coach Mentor Program and believes that it will create many opportunities for female coaches to pursue career goals in coaching and sports. Grant MacEwan College's Women's Volleyball Program Apprentice Coach Kylie Berg – A former member of the Griffins' Women's Volleyball team, Kylie has already accumulated experience as a coach and leader. Kylie joined the Grant MacEwan coaching staff in 2004-05 as an assistant coach. During this time, she was also a practicum coach at the University of Alberta and the University of Regina as part of the Women's National "B" Volleyball team. She has also worked at the Jasper Volleyball camps for the past 4 years, coached Alberta Club youth and high school programs providing leadership to young coaches and players. Kylie looks forward to furthering her knowledge under the guidance and leadership of Ken Briggs who has helped her both as a player and coach. As an athlete, she feels that there is a need for more female coaches at elite levels and as ambassador for the sport, Kylie wants to share her experiences and passion for volleyball. Throughout the years, he has always given young coaches opportunities to work with him in an assistant capacity, sharing his knowledge and providing them with opportunities to further develop as a coach. Over the past 20 years, Ken has attended many coaching seminars within Alberta and across Canada. Certified Level III, he has taught at Jasper Volleyball Camps and has assisted at three National team identification camps over the past 4 years. Through this program, Ken hopes to give Kyle the necessary technical and mental skills she needs to further assist her as she strives to coach volleyball at an elite level. Throughout the years, she had the privilege to develop her skills under numerous coaches who've inspired her to give back to the sport. Eager to learn and gain further experience in coaching, Monica looks forward to working under the guidance and leadership of a coach she respects and admires. Having recently received her community coaching certificate at the senior level from the Ontario Soccer Association, Monica is already giving back as head coach of a U10 girls competitive team. She looks forward to using the skills acquired in this program to further develop these young players. As a goalkeeper herself, Monica also wants to focus much of her attention to the goalkeepers, an area which she feels is often overlooked in coaching. Mentor Coach Dan Docherty – Dan has been heavily involved with the game of soccer for the past 40 years as a player, official, coach and administrator. Outside of St. Clair College, Dan continues to support the local Windsor club system as a coach and organizer. He also attends and hosts player and coach seminars on an annual basis, allowing him to learn more about the game while also creating opportunities for the community coaches to broaden their knowledge of soccer. As he embarks on his 4th season as Head Coach of St. Clair's Women's Soccer team, he looks forward to helping interested female coaches take a more prominent role in Women's Soccer. Furthermore, recognizing the lack of goalkeeper instruction, Dan is excited to have Monica on board to assist in an area that is such an integral part of the game of soccer. Grant MacEwan College's Women's Basketball Program Apprentice Coach Stephanie Stolk – Passionate about basketball since the age of 10, Stephanie played competitively at both the College and University levels. Throughout the years, Stephanie developed a strong passion for teaching and passing on her basketball knowledge to the next generation of players. While studying at Collège Montmorency, Marian played varsity basketball from 1999-2002. During this time, she led her team to 3 National Championships and three medals (1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze). She continued her basketball career while studying at Laval University. Over the years, Marian has recognized the importance of promoting sport to younger players. As such, she has coached high school Bantam teams and travels across the province, speaking about the benefit of sport to high school students. Fortunate enough to have experienced mentors helping her and furthering her development, Marian wishes to do the same by sharing her knowledge and experiences with young women. Mentor Coach Guillaume Giroux - While he was the Head Coach of the AA squad from 1999-2001, Guillaume has been the Head Coach of the Nomades AAA Women's Basketball since 2001. She has worked at numerous basketball camps over the last eight years with various organizations, including the Vancouver Grizzlies, Capilano College, 3D Basketball, Kitsilano High School and Saint Thomas Aquinas High School, where she was this year's Head Coach. She has also been a volunteer coach for age groups varying from grade 2 to college level.
