New medals may be mined at Vancouver Games
JAMES CHRISTIE Globe and Mail Update Canada's pioneer women ski jumpers will know in November if they'll have the chance to fly to gold at Vancouver's 2010 Winter Olympics. Ski jumping for women is one of several proposed events being studied by the International Olympic Committee's program committee for possible inclusion in the Winter Games program. Currently, ski-jumping is the only single-gender sport at the Games. Also being studied mixed doubles curling, skier-cross, team events in Alpine skiing, bobsled and luge, and a biathlon mixed relay. The IOC will report back next month. At last winter's Olympics in Turin, snowboard-cross and team speed skating were new medal events. The additions could be an important element in Canada reaching its goal of being the No. 1 wonter sport nation in the Vancouver medal standings. The country has a history of podium finishes in new Olympics events, such as freestyle skiing, snowboarding, women's biathlon, curling and women's hockey If additions for 2010 are approved at the IOC level, then it's up to Vancouver organizing committee, known as VANOC, to judge whether they can or will be staged. VANOC will weigh any addition costs of including the sports against whether Canadians would win medals, Cathy Priestner Allinger, VANOC's executive vice-president for sport, told The Canadian Press. "We would try to balance out if there was a financial impact or an operational impact… We would weigh that against how well would Canada do (and) is this a good thing for Canadian winter sports? We would consider all those factors and then make a very informed decision." Notwithstanding Canada's goal of being No. 1, the late Mark Lowry, who was Canada's best technical mind in Games matters and who originally set the target of 35 medals for Canadians to top the standings, predicted Canada would have to fend off more than the usual suspects to win the Games. Germans, Norwegians and Rusians will be joined by the Chinese as top medal competitors by 2010 as they convert the strength and speed of gymnastics training to winter disciplines. Priestner Allinger said no new venues need to be constructed for the proposed events, though rooming capacity might need a slight adjustment at the athlete village. The skier-cross race could be held on the same course as the snowboard-cross. Groups of racers hurtle over a course full of bumps, jumps and sling-shot curves. Mixed doubles curling involves teams made up of a man and a woman. The team events in bobsled and luge have both the men and women racing. Their times are combined and the best time wins. The Alpine team event has racers competing in different disciplines like slalom and giant slalom. New sports, new disciplines and programs to include more female athletes have usually been a surprisingly rich source of precious Olympic hardware for Canada. When biathlon for women was introduced, Myriam Bédard shot down a bronze and two gold medals in 1992 and 1994 and became a household name --- even though most Canadian households didn't have a clue about her sport. Snowboard rider Ross Rebagliati shredded through the snow at Nagano in 1998 and came down the mountain with a gold medal. Freestyle moguls racing was brought into the fold in 1992 at Albertville and aerials came on board in 1994 at Lillehammer. It was at Lillehammer that Canadians lined up for a full set of medals, Jean-Luc Brassard taking gold on the bumps, and Philippe LaRoche and Lloyd Langlois taking silver and bronze, respectively, in the air. Similar stories held true for the introduction of short track speed skating, where Quebec skaters such as Mark Gagnon and Annie Perreault mined golds, and curling where the late Sandra Schmirler w
