Trampoline Gold for Cockburn and MacLennan
Canadian Sport News ZIELONA GORA, Poland – Karen Cockburn and Rosannagh MacLennan will head to the world trampoline and tumbling championships this fall in Quebec City on an impressive roll. The Toronto pair notched their eighth straight World Cup victory on Saturday in the synchro event. The win highlighted a triple medal Canadian performance at the final World Cup trampoline and tumbling competition before the world championships October 31-November 3 in the provincial capital. Cockburn was also second in individual trampoline and Emily Smith of Burlington, Ont., added a bronze in women's tumbling. Cockburn and MacLennan tabulated 47.90 points for the win with Gu Qingwen and Jiang Yiqi of China second at 46.90 and Irina Karavaeva and Natalia Chernova of Russia third at 46.30. "It's amazing," said Cockburn. "We've never been worst than second internationally since we came together two years ago. I never expected we would dominate this much. There are teams though that can challenge us and the fact we're managing to stay on top is pretty exciting." In individual trampoline, Karavaeva took the gold with 38.00 for her 27th career World Cup win finishing ahead of Cockburn at 37.50. The competition concludes a busy stretch of four competitions over two weeks for Cockburn and the other Canadian team members. "My performance was better in Russia," said Cockburn referring to her second place finish earlier this week at the World Cup stop in St. Petersburg. "A lot of competitors had trouble finishing today so I was happy to put together a decent routine. I was feeling pretty tired. But my results across all four competitions were amazing and I'm going into worlds showing I'm at the top of my game." In women's tumbling, Samantha Palmer led Britain to a 1-2 finish 67.80 points followed by Sarah Turner at 65.50 and Smith followed at 65.10. Jenna Stamp of St. Catharines, Ont., was fifth. "On her second pass Emily did a new movement with a high degree of difficulty for the first time in international competition," said Stéphan Duchesne, Gymnastics Canada's trampoline and tumbling high performance director. "It's an extremely important element for her to add. Now she can match with the top in the world." In men's tumbling, 17-year-old Alex Siefert of Calgary wa
