Canada Sweeps Trinidad & Tobago En Route To Semi-Final Berth
Volleyball Canada
After finishing second in their pool behind Cuba and lining up to face Trinidad & Tobago in the quarterfinal crossover, the Canadian Women did exactly what was expected of them this evening, defeating the team from the Caribbean 3-0 in straight sets. Set scores were 25-14, 25-13 & 25-14 in favour of Canada.
Falin Schaefer (Yellow Grass, SK) and Tasha Holness (Calgary, AB) led Canada with 10 and nine points respectively. Schaefer's total included six stuff blocks while Holness added five.
Despite some tenacity shown by Trinidad, Canada easily handled the developing team, while allowing coach Naoki Miyashita to give his bench an opportunity to see action on the court. This included Stephanie Penner, who set the majority of the match and gave starter Larissa Cundy a chance to rest up for tomorrow night's semi-final.
Canada will now face the Dominican Republic in the semi-final tomorrow night in a rematch of the bronze medal match at the NORCECA Championship in Winnipeg this past September. That result saw Canada lose by just two points in the 5th set.
"Trinidad & Tobago continues to improve every year and is a team with good potential," commented Naoki Miyashita. "I am excited about the match of tomorrow against Dominican Republic and we will give our best effort."
The 24th ranked Canadians competed in Group A alongside Cuba (3rd) and Puerto Rico (19th) in the preliminary round. The Dominican Republic (14th), Mexico (25th) and Trinidad & Tobago (70th) round out Group B. With a third place finish at last month's FIVB World Cup in Japan, the USA has already qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games, leaving the six top teams from the NORCECA zone to vie for one Olympic berth in this continental qualifying tournament. The 2007 NORCECA Women's Continental Olympic Qualification Championship is taking place in Monterrey, Mexico December 17-22.

Friday, December 21 - 8:00pm - Semi-Final vs. Dominican Republic
