Canada earns sweep at synchro Swiss Open

OTTAWA – Canada completed the sweep Saturday at the Swiss Open winning gold in the Team Free event.

Earlier in the competition Canada had finished first in Team Tech and yesterday in Combo.

Looking to finish the competition on a high Canada had an outstanding performance today and was rewarded with a score of 93.167. China (Guandong) finished second with a score of 92.167 and Switzerland was third with 88.167.

“This performance was a wonderful way to wrap-up the competition,” said Canadian head coach Denise Sauve. “We were fabulous and Canada dominated the competition. We displayed strength, confidence and lots of energy.”

From the moment they arrived Canada felt well received by the Swiss fans.

“The public really seemed to enjoy the routines which is such great motivation,” said Genevieve Belanger. “This competition is not only a success for our team, but for Canada. We are extremely proud.”

In addition to Canada and Switzerland the competition also featured teams from China, Australia, Japan, Sweden, Monaco as well as Swiss Club teams.

What’s next for Canada

Canada’s World Championship team will be in action at the 13th FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy starting July 18, 2009.
