VIEWS (Voices Inspiring Equity for Women in Sport and Physical Activity) is a program developed by the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS) and sponsored by Nike Canada. It has been designed for female athletes, volunteers, coaches, educators, administrators, and anyone else who believes in the positive impact of sport and physical activity to promote the benefits to others. VIEWS members are encouraged to talk to people in a wide variety of forums. Whether talking to their peers, their students, work colleagues, their children, or a large audience, they reinforce the place of girls and women in sport and physical activity, emphasize fun and fitness, and highlight the people who have influenced them to become involved in sport and physical activity.

Point of VIEW is a mini-workshop that will provide you with a professional development opportunity and the chance to network with VIEWS members and others. Guest speakers will present on a variety of topics including body image & self-esteem, role models & mentorship, and key messages for girls and women. Speakers include Dr. Tish Doyle-Baker, a Clinical Exercise Physiologist from the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary; Dr. Dru Marshall, Associate Dean Academic in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta and former National Level field hockey player and coach; Christine Nordhagen Olympic Athlete, World Champion Wrestler, Public Speaker and Teacher; Kathy Salmon Farstad a two time Olympic Athlete, teacher, mother of three and public speaking facilitator and Karin Lofstrom, Executive Director of CAAWS. Lisa Bowes, a sports broadcaster, public speaker and entrepreneur will moderate the workshop. The event will include a light meal, goodies and lots of FUN!

CAAWS will also be hosting an On the Move Workshop at the University of Calgary Campus. On the Move is CAAWS' national initiative designed to increase opportunities for inactive girls and young women to participate in sport and physical activity. This workshop will present an overview of the initiative, facilitate discussion concerning the issues and barriers surrounding participation, share best practices from across Canada, and provide "how to" tips to increase the physical activity of girls and young women in Alberta. This is a practical session with implications and discussions relevant for everyone from programmers to policy makers. A complimentary On the Move Handbook will be given to each participant.

There is no cost to attend these events, but you must register in advance. Please confirm your attendance for the Calgary POINT OF VIEW and/or the ON THE MOVE workshops by registering with Ali Riel by e-mail at ariel@caaws.ca or by telephone at 613-562-5667. The registration deadline is Friday, March 4, 2005. Space is limited so please register early!

Gather your friends and colleagues for a day of learning and networking! Please pass this invitation on to your networks and contacts. Everyone is welcome!
