Canadians win three Gymnastic golds on final day
MELBOURNE, Australia -- Toronto’s high-flying trampoline duo of Jason Burnett and Karen Cockburn both won gold and Dominque Pegg of Sarnia, Ont., topped the field in the women’s senior vault on Sunday to cap a strong overall Canadian performance at the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships. Adding bronze medals were Rosannagh MacLennan of Toronto in women’s trampoline, Kristina Vaculk of Whitby, Ont., in the women’s gymnastics senior floor exercise, Madeleine Gardiner of Cambridge, Ont., in the junior beam competition and Maria Kitkarska of Montreal in the junior rhythmic gymnastics ball event. Three-time Olympic medal winner Cockburn, who shows no signs of slowing down, came out on top in a tight battle for the women’s trampoline title with a winning score of 38.10, just a tenth of a point ahead of runner-up Li Meng of China at 38.00. MacLennan was third with 37.50 points. “I struggled a bit with travelling but overall I was happy with how I performed here,” said Cockburn, who was competing at her first big meet since winning bronze at the world championships last fall. In the men’s trampoline final, Burnett edged Jan Zie of China for the gold with a score of 41.10. Zie took the silver with 40.90 points and teammate Yu Dakang was third at 40.30. “It wasn’t a great routine for me, but it was enough to get the job done,” said Burnett, who broke his own world record for degree of difficulty in the qualification round with a new mark of 18 points. Charles Thibault of Quebec City placed eighth in the men’s final and in the junior event Mariah Madigan of Toronto and Curtis Gerein of Kelowna, B.C. both finished 5th. In the women’s artistic gymnastics finals, Pegg landed two solid vaults for her victory, the lone competitor outside of the United States and China to win gold. “I try not to think about medals when I’m competing but it’s always in the back of your mind,” said Pegg, who also placed 7th in the beam final. “Winning gold here against the top Chinese and Americans is a pretty big accomplishment for me.” Kristina Vaculik of Whitby, Ont., qualified for all four women’s finals and came away with her best result on floor, placing third behind Rebecca Bross and Alexandra Raisman of the United States. She gave her floor routine a boost by adding a double back somersault with a full twist to her first tumbling line. “It’s taken me awhile to get that move back into my routine and it felt good,” said Vaculik, has been piling up medals since coming back in December from a serious elbow injury that knocked her out of competition for more than a year. Vaculik also placed 4th on uneven bars and vault and was 6th on beam. In other Canadian women’s gymnastics results, Sabrina Gill of Oakville, Ont., was 7th on vault and beam, and Gardiner was 5th on vault, 7th on uneven bars and floor. Rounding out the rhythmic gymnastics results Alexandra Martincek of Markham, Ont., and Demetra Mancheva of Vancouver were 4th and 5th respectively in both the senior ball and ribbon events. In the junior competition Kitkarska was fourth in clubs and Lourenca Agla of Montreal was 8th in the ball event. Contact: Ron Scammell (613) 298-9196
