Canada Defeats Mexico at Pan Am Volleyball
Volleyball Canda Canada bounced back from their disappointing loss to the USA last night to completely dominate Mexico at the 2005 Pan America Cup in Santo Domingo. Canada took the match in straight sets 25-20, 25-21, and 25-12 qualifying them for the top half and play offs at this prestigious event. "This win was important for us not only in advancing in this tournament, but in sending Mexico the message that we mean business at the up and coming qualifier this August for the World Championships in Puerto Rico," commented Head Coach Lorne Sawula. "It was also a very good team effort at staying positive after yesterday's loss to the USA and will give us some new found momentum for the tough cross over match ahead." Leading the way for Canada was Emily Cordonier (Vancouver, BC), who came back after an injury and came off the bench to contribute 13 points. Other quality performances were put in by Joanna Niemczewska (Calgary, AB) with 12 points and the best matches for the tour by setter Stephanie Penner (Dauphin, MB) with 8 points. Captain Melissa Raymond (Sherbrooke, PQ) also gave Canada some big kills adding 8 points. "This has been our best performance to date and nice to rebound after our dismal effort vs. the USA," commented Raymond. "This team can do it; we just have to continue to believe in the work we put in and in ourselves." The final round will be made up of Brazil, Dominican Republic, Cuba, USA, Canada and either Puerto Rico or Venezuela. Because of a special protest by Puerto Rico, last nights fifth set of their loss to Venezuela has to be replayed on Wednesday morning. The winner will go on to the final round and no spectators will be allowed. The Pan American Cup is taking place June 10 – 18 in the Dominican Republic, and features the top 12 Women's Teams from North, Central and South America, along with the Caribbean region, and is a qualifier for the 2006 Grand Prix. Team Canada has been placed in preliminary round robin Pool B along with Cuba, USA, Mexico, Jamaica and Barbados. Pool A consists of Argentina, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica. The top four teams from each pool will advance to the playoff round June 16 – 18. Representing Canada at the tournament are: Setters: Stephanie Penner (Dauphin, MB), Julie Morin (Quebec City, PQ) Outside Hitters: Tammy Mahon (Holland, MB), Joanna Niemczewska (Calgary, AB), Falin Schaefer (Yellow Grass, SK), Emily Cordonier (Vancouver, BC), Gina Schmidt (Beaverlodge, AB) Middle Blockers: Melissa Raymond (Sherbrooke, PQ), Stephanie Wheler (Saskatoon, SK) Cheryl Stinson (Ottawa, ON), Lies Reimer (Calgary, AB) Libero: Annie Levesque (Amqui, PQ) If any press are interested in reaching Team Canada, they can be contacted at their hotel in the Dominican Republic at 809-562
