Canada ties France 1-1 in women's soccer opener
CIS IZMIR, Turkey - Team captain Erin Ramsay of Calgary scored at the 79th minute and Marie-Pierre Bilodeau of Beauport, Que. was stellar in the crease as Canada opened the women's soccer tournament at the 23rd Summer Universiade with a 1-1 draw with France. While the contest will go into the books as a tie the Canadians won the penalty-kick session held immediately after the match, thus securing an advantage if tie-breaking procedures prove necessary at the end of the round-robin tournament. Ramsay, a defender from the University of Calgary, found the back of the net off a corner with 11 minutes left to play in regulation time to give the Canadians a 1-0 lead. Nelly Guilbert brought France back into the game only six minutes later however, also converting a corner kick. Following a relatively calm opening half during which the two rivals studied one another, Canada came back from the break roaring and had the French on their heels, but couldn't convert on three corner kicks in a span of four minutes. University of Alberta forward Claire Thomas of St. Albert, Alta. had a golden opportunity to break the ice at the 56th minute when she found herself all alone in front of the French keeper. At the other end, Bilodeau, from Laval University, had her best moment at the 51st minute when she made a diving save on a breakaway. Laval teammate Francine Brousseau of Quebec City had one last chance to play hero for Canada when she received the ball in the crease with seconds on the clock, but sent the ball well over the net. "This match-up with a team as technically sound as France was an excellent test for us, and we approached it with the right attitude," commented Bilodeau. "We weren't afraid to impose ourselves physically and I think we set the tone for the rest of the tournament." "Even though I'm a little disappointed since we came so close to winning this game, I have to be happy with our overall performance," said head coach Marc Mounicot , sideline boss of the McGill University Martlets. "For a group that has been together for only a few days, the girls executed the game plan to perfection." Canada will be back on the pitch Friday at 11:30 a.m. EST (6:30 p.m. local) to face Japan.
