CAAWS Joins Forces with AthletesCAN and Coaches of Canada to mark International Day Against Homophobia
Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS), AthletesCAN, and Coaches of Canada have been working together to mark this year’s International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) on May 17th, 2010. “CAAWS has been a leader in Canadian sport and society by creating tools to help organizations learn, understand and eliminate homophobia within their organizations,” said Karin Lofstrom, CAAWS Executive Director. “We are proud to have opened up the dialogue on the issue through workshops and resources to help people understand homophobia and the impact it has on the sports community.” Spearheaded by Fondation Émergence, this year’s theme “Speaking about Silence: Homophobia in the Sports World” targets the sport culture. This campaign marks the eighth anniversary of IDAHO. "Every athlete in this country should have access to a safe, fair and inclusive sport system no matter what their differences,” said Jasmine Northcott, AthletesCAN Executive Director. “May 17th is an important opportunity for Canada to look within and ensure we are carving out a sport system that is inclusive and will better the experience for athletes in this country.” CAAWS, AthletesCAN, and Coaches of Canada, welcome the opportunity to work with other leaders in the Canadian sport community to develop longer-term strategies to make sport more welcoming to sexual and gender diversity beyond May 17th, 2010. To find out how you can get involved, please visit CAAWS’ Homophobia page. To mark IDAHO, CAAWS hosted Lunch and Learn event at the Ottawa Tennis Club with facilitator Jennifer Birch-Jones. Participants participated and viewed the new documentary “Training Rules,” which uncovers how the dreams and lives of many young female athletes have been destroyed by the intensely homophobic climate of many U.S. colleges and universities.
