Canada opens World League water polo with win over Hungary
Canadian Sport News Dominique Perreault of Montreal scored three goals to lead Canada to an 11-9 victory over Hungary in its opening round robin game at the World League Super Final women’s water polo tournament. The two teams spent the first half trading markers with Canada emerging with a 6-5 lead at the half. Perreault’s second goal to open the third quarter gave Canada a lead it would never relinquish although the Hungarians closed the gap to 10-9 with 2:32 left to play. Christine Robinson of Lachine, Que., responded 11 seconds later with an insurance goal. “The girls were pretty relaxed in the water and we felt like we dominated a big part of the game,” said Canadian team captain Krystina Alogbo of Rivières-des-Prairies, Que. ‘’We just played our game and executed well.’’ Robinson and Emily Csikos of Calgary scored two goals each while Joelle Bekhazi and Marina Radu, both of Pointe-Claire, Que., Monika Eggens of Vancouver and Tara Campbell of Baie-d’Urfé, Que., scored once. Rachel Riddell of Victoria played the entire match in goal and made 12 saves. ‘’Good execution on the power play was a key reason for our win,’’ said Canadian national team coach Patrick Oaten. ‘’We should improve every game but the reality is we are preparing for bigger events down the road as we move towards the 2011 world championships.’’ The eight-countries at the World League Super Final all advanced to the tournament through regional qualifiers. Canada, ranked second in the world, won its qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico last month for the America’s zone with the U.S., the reigning world champions, taking the second spot. ‘’This tournament is a big test for us,’’ said Alogbo. ‘’We want to show our silver medal at the worlds last year was no fluke and show we can win a medal every time at these big tournaments.’’ Canada is in Pool A with the Netherlands, China and Hungary. Pool B members are the U.S., Australia, Greece and Russia. Seven of the top-eight teams in the world are in the tournament, China is ranked 11th. The U.S., and Canada were 1-2 respectively in the World League last year. There were upsets in the two games before Canada-Hungary. China beat the Netherlands 7-5 and Australia defeated number-three Russia 12-8. The Canadians face China on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. (EDT) The U.S., and Canada placed 1-2 last year.
