Canadian MacKay wins historic fencing medal
CBC Sports Sherraine MacKay made history Monday by becoming the first Canadian ever to capture a medal at the fencing world championships. MacKay, who hails from Brooks, Alta., claimed bronze in the women's epee event in Leipzig, Germany. No Canadian fencer had ever finished higher than sixth place at the worlds, something done a handful of times in various classes, including twice by MacKay. "It's quite substantial," MacKay told Canadian Press. "It's just that it could have been more and I'm surprised that Canada hasn't had a medal before this because there's a lot of great talent there." MacKay advanced to the semifinals by winning her first four matches of the day. Her hopes for gold were dashed after losing 15-9 to Danuta Dmowska of Poland in the semifinal, leaving the Canadian fencer with a share of bronze with France's Laura Flessel-Colovic. Dmowska defeated Maarika Vosu of Estonia 12-11 in the final to capture gold. MacKay has been building to a podium result in recent competitions having finished fifth in her last three World Cup events. "[The bronze] is a huge boost for Canadian fencing," Danek Nowosielski, the high performance director for Canadian Fencing Federation, told Canadian Press. "This is a culmination of four years of work for the program." MacKay still has a shot at a second medal. She leads the Canadian team comprised of Catherine Dunnette of Calgary, Monique Kavelaars of Toronto and Julie Leprohon of Montreal into Friday's team epee event. Canada placed fourth in team epee at the 2004 Athens O
