Angel Anderson
Originally
from Winnipeg (Man.), Angel Anderson, has found great success
in the sport of amateur boxing. She has won three provincial
titles, two Western Canadian titles, and is currently ranked
5th in the Canadian 69-kilogram Senior Open Female Division.
Angel attributes her success to hard work and dedication,
as well as her continued encouragement and guidance from great
coaches and trainers over the years.
Two years ago, Angel moved to Edmonton to enrol in the Northern
Alberta Institute of Technology’s (NAIT) Personal Fitness
Trainer program. She recently graduated with high honours
and is now a certified personal trainer (CSEP-CPT) and corrective
exercise specialist (CES), a Group Exercise Leader with the
Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Association (AFLCA),
and a National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Level
1 Coach.
Since graduating, Angel spends much of her time at the Beverly
Bronx Boxing Club in Edmonton. While she continues to train
as a competitive boxer, she also brings passion and energy
as a volunteer. She has had the opportunity to explore and
assist with everything from coaching young athletes and event
planning, to providing conditioning workouts and program designs.
Through her volunteer work, Angel recognizes the importance
of being a positive role model to the youth around her, and
providing them with healthy alternatives to harmful behaviours.
Angel is very grateful for such a fulfilling experience and
the opportunity to give back to her community. She accepts
this scholarship with great honour and will continue to encourage
and support others in achieving their goals for healthy living.
Sheena Dubyk
A
native of Saskatchewan, Sheena Dubyk is an energetic young
woman with a passion for and commitment to sport and active
living. Sheena began playing hockey at the age of six years
old. Growing up, she tried and played various sports including
a season of high school tackle football. When she reached
grades 11 and 12, Sheena decided to focus her time and energy
on both hockey and wrestling.
After graduating from high school, Sheena enrolled at the
University of Regina as a French major, with a minor in Physical
Education. In her first year, she joined the University of
Regina’s Women’s wrestling team. In addition,
she had an opportunity to participate in a one year study
abroad program in the province of Quebec. During her time
at Université Laval, Sheena joined a recreational hockey
team. She enjoyed being back on the rink so much that, upon
her return to the University of Regina this fall, she will
be trying out for the Cougar’s women’s varsity
hockey team.
Sheena is looking forward to completing her degree and starting
her teaching career. She wants to teach physical education
and share her love of sports with her students through coaching.
Many of Sheena’s fondest high school memories are of
her participation in various sports and the relationships
with both coaches and teammates. She wants to give young women
the opportunity to create wonderful memories by living a healthy
and active life. Sheena hopes to one day be the coach that
made a difference in a young girl’s life; the coach
that made sports fun.
Alannah MacLean
Since
the time she could walk, Alannah MacLean has been involved
in sports. Growing up in Labrador City (N.L.) her parents
made sure she had every opportunity to participate in different
sports, including downhill skiing, swimming and gymnastics.
It was not until her family moved to Sudbury (Ont.) however,
that Alannah found her true passion for cross-country skiing.
With the support of her family, her ski coach and team and
the Walden Fitness Club, and by maintaining focus, hard work
and dedication, Alannah was able to reach her goal of becoming
a national competitive skier, placing 3rd in the aggregate
rankings at Nationals.
Sport has always been a huge influence in Alannah’s
life. Throughout her training, Alannah continued her involvement
in high school sports. She was the co-president of her high
school’s Athletic Association and was named recipient
of the Senior Female Athlete Award. Alannah’s love for
sport also carries over into her community. She regularly
volunteers with the Walden Fitness Club, coaching young up-and-coming
girls in the club. Alannah has also been a keynote speaker
in the community, sharing her own experiences at events such
as the Guts and Glory Luncheon and at the Ontario Midget Championships.
In doing so, Alannah hopes to inspire girls and young women
across Canada to pursue active and healthy lifestyles.
This year, Alannah was selected as a member of the National
Development Centre for cross-country skiing in Thunder Bay.
She will also be entering her first year at Lakehead University,
pursuing an honours degree in Economics.
Jordan Sequillion
Sixteen
year old Jordan Sequillion is an honour student at Kingston
Collegiate and Vocation Institute High School (KCVI), a member
of the KCVI athletics association, a natural athlete, and
a promising archer competing at both the national and international
levels.
Jordan was recently the youngest female recurve archer to
compete for Team Ontario at the Canada Winter Games; she won
a silver medal. Other achievements include winning a gold
medal and team silver at the Canadian Indoor Championships,
capturing a silver medal at the US National Indoor Field Championships,
anchoring the gold medal for the Canadian Senior Team, and
setting a new national record in the North and South America
indoor event.
Jordan’s passion for archery led her to become a NCCP
Beginner Level Coach, enabling her to share her love of the
sport and encourage others to try it. In addition to training
several young families, Jordan is actively leading the creation
of her high school’s first archery club to encourage
further participation in the sport. Jordan also shares her
experiences and offers guidance to young archers through a
personal website and blog dedicated to archery.
Jordan trains six days a week in pursuit of her Olympic dreams.
Upon completion of high school, she plans to pursue a degree
in kinesiology and physiotherapy, as well as become a national
level archery coach to train the next generation of Canadian
archers. Jordan’s strong work ethic, passion and love
for the sport continues to motivate her today. She hopes that
she can continue to inspire and encourage young athletes to
achieve their dreams through their participation in sport.
Jenna Spencer
Jenna
Spencer (Pemberton, B.C.) has always been active and enjoyed
doing sports such as soccer, baseball, track and field and
volleyball. Five years ago however, she tried luge for the
first time and instantly fell in love with the sport. Today,
Jenna is training to be a Junior National athlete and is preparing
to train for the sport in countries such as Germany and Romania.
While luge consumes the winter months, Jenna is an avid paddler
in the summer and is involved in the sports of canoeing, kayaking
and dragon boating.
Last summer, Jenna competed in the canoe/kayak events at
the 2010 British Columbia Summer Games where she captured
one gold, one silver and three bronze medals in various categories.
This past summer, she participated in the Dragon Boat World
Club Crew Championships in Toronto (Ont.) and the International
Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) World Championships in Tampa
(Florida), where she took home three gold and three silver
medals. In addition to training and competing, Jenna shares
her passion and love for dragon boat by coaching younger kids
in the sport.
Jenna’s goal for dragon boat is to attend and participate
in the 2013 IDBF World Championships in Hungary. Her goal
in the sport of luge is to represent Canada at the 2018 Korea
Winter Games.
Currently a grade ten student at Whistler Secondary School,
Jenna hopes to attend the University of Victoria upon graduation.
She would like to pursue a degree in kinesiology and physiotherapy
in hopes to eventually become a sports massage therapist.
