Update: December 2008
Softball Ontario indentified that developing female umpires
is important to the future of the game of Softball. In May
2008, Softball Ontario offered a Junior Development/Intermediate
for young female participants only to help them realize that
have an avenue to participate in softball after their playing
career. By offering this opportunity it allowed young females
who love the game of Softball to be involved in an important
leadership role in our great game. Typically softball Umpires
are male and this opportunity allowed Softball Ontario to
build capacity for female officials and be able to provide
training for them in a female only setting. Thirteen (13)
young women from across Ontario participated in the Girls
Rule Clinic. The Girlz Rule Clinic covered many topics, including:
The Role of the Female Umpire, Umpire Dress Code and Equipment
for Female Officials, Umpire Signals/Umpire Mechanics, Game
Management Techniques- a female in a leadership role, Handling
Confrontations- with male Coaches, players and spectators,
use of the Rule Book. Softball Ontario was pleased with the
success of this program to the extent that it is now an integral
part of the Softball Ontario Umpires Clinic program. Softball
Ontario would like to take this opportunity to thank CAAWS
for the financial assistance for launching the Girlz Rule
Clinic.
