Golf hall welcomes Marlene Stewart Streit

Marlene Stewart Streit was inducted Monday into the World Golf Hall of Fame, the first Canadian so honoured.

"I'm proud to be the first Canadian," said Streit, a lifetime amateur elected in the veterans category.

"This is huge for Canada. To see the Canadian flag flying here is simply magic."

Also inducted were Tom Kite, Isao Aoki and Charlie Sifford, the first African-American honouree.

Including Streit, that raised membership in the 30-year-old hall to 104.

"I'm just absolutely overwhelmed," she said. "I'm so pleased and so honoured because there's so many great Canadian players.

"For me to be nominated first, it's just huge and I think it's huge for Canada. And I want to share my induction with all of Canada and the entire Canadian golfing community who supported me my whole career."

Streit, a resident of Unionville, Ont., is the only golfer to win the Australian, British, Canadian and United States women's amateur championships.

She has also won 11 Canadian Ladies Open Amateur events, nine Canadian Ladies Closed Amateur titles and three Canadian Ladies Senior Amateur tournaments.

The 70-year-old also owns four USGA titles, including the 1956 U.S. Women's Amateur, and, last year, became the oldest golfer to capture the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur, a tournament she has claimed three times.

"That was totally amazing last year," she said. "How, at age 69, did I win a national championship, even if it was a seniors tournament?

"It was just one of those weeks where everything just went well. The putts dropped and I didn't miss very many."
