Grant-A-Week WINNER
Susanne M. Dandenault Weightlifting

akasane designMy name is Susanne M. Dandenault and I am a weightlifter on the Canadian Team.

I spent five years at the University of Washington on a track and field scholarship, which gave me a B.A. in Psychology and a BA in Environmental Studies in 1993.

I returned to Winnipeg (home) and the University of Manitoba where I graduated from Law School in 1996 which is also the year I found weightlifting.

My mentor and personal hero, Theresa Brick, introduced me to this great, empowering sport for women and I haven't looked back since.

I train nearly full time and when I'm not hoisting weights I am working as an Office Administrator for the Manitoba Weightlifting Association.

In addition I am the newly elected chair for Athletes CAN, Canada's national athletes association as well as being president of the Manitoba Athletes Association, a provincial-type counterpart.

I love my sport and I love working with athletes to ensure that they know their rights and are treated fairly at all levels.

I plan to use this grant money for travel to the World Weightlifting Championships in Athens, Greece the end of November 1999. As this trip is totally self-funded, I need all the help I can get!! Women's weightlifting has come a long way in its short existence and I would love to see it go further.

Thank you CAAWS for all your help for women and sport in Canada.

Sincerely, Susanne
