In July the Council undertook to construct
a float for the Gold Cup Parade held annually in Charlottetown,
PEI.
The Gold Cup Parade is the largest
parade in Eastern Canada. This year's version held on August
13 attracted close to 90 floats and bands. The parade received
live CBC television coverage. The parade theme was "Extra, Extra
Read All About It! - Headlines of the 20th Century."
In keeping with the theme
the Council reproduced newspaper headlines of female hockey
events from 1928 to 1999. Four headlines,
each measuring two feet by seven feet, were fastened to the
skirting on both sides of the flatbed. The centre of the float
featured a hockey stick measuring 38 feet long surrounded by
hockey players of various ages. Banners on the front and back
of the float completed it.
The float was assembled
in a warehouse the evening prior to the parade with several
parade committee members remaining until 2 a.m.
to add the final touches. The float garnered the Spirit of Youth
Award.
At a reception following the parade
two members of the Female Hockey Council were presented a plaque.
The reception was attended by dignitaries including the Lieutenant-Governor
of the province.
Female hockey received further exposure
when the parade-winning floats were pictured in the local newspaper
the day following the parade. Female Council felt the effort
and expense was more than justified; a price could not be placed
on the exposure female hockey received on this project.
As our new Council begins its work we are most
appreciative of CAAWS and Nike's financial assistance.
