Grant-A-Week WINNER
Renee Ann Rath - Figure Skating

akasane designHi! My name is Renee Ann Rath.

I am 16 years old and going into my last year of high school. I am thrilled to be a recipient the CAAWS-Nike Grant-A-Week Fund. My passion is figure skating, I LOVE IT! The glide of the blade, the feeling of flying, and the wind on your face.

My mom tied on my first pair of skates when I was 22 months old. Right away I loved it. I have been blessed with a natural talent for jumping, getting high in the air. Our sport provides many opportunities to perform whether it is an ice show or a competition, and I love, that. Performing is one of my specialties. My home club is the Cypress School of Skating in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. We as skaters are fortunate that our club provides us with adequate ice time, seminars workshops, and an excellent coaching staff.

Just recently I achieved Quadruple Gold Modal status and also received the Southern Zone and Alberta/North West Territories Program Assistant Award of the year. I love to teach thelittle kids in our club and pass on my knowledge of the sport.

As figure skaters we follow an off-ice program which we carry out through one of out local fitness centers. I enjoy biking, Tae-Bo, and weight lifting. I am an honours student in school and when I graduate I hope to join Disney on Ice and travel with the show for a couple of years. Then I'll probably go to school to become a Laboratory Technologist. I have a loving and supportive family. I live with my mom and two brothers. In a single parent home with three kids money is very tight especially when you are a very sports and athletic minded family.

Both my brothers play hockey and my mom works three jobs to keep everyone involved in their activities.

This grant will be put towards summer ice, costs and lessons. Figure skating can become a very expensive sport. I am grateful to CAAWS and Nike for this grant. I plan to keep skating a part of my life for as long as I live.
