Grant-A-Week WINNER
Kyla Gillespie - Hockey
Hello,
my name is Kyla Gillespie and I am 18 years old. My passion is
to play Ice Hockey.
I have been playing hockey for about
10 years. When I first started playing there were no girls teams
to play on so I played with the boys. Girls were not seen playing
hockey as much as they are now.
CAAWS Grant-A-Week has shown me that
girls can get involved in sports and keep playing them. Right
now I am training at the Olympic Oval Female High Performance
Hockey Program in Calgary. This is a full time, seven month program
and I love it. There is nothing better then playing the sport
you love and having fun as well.
Sports have always played a major role
in my life. In school I was on every sports team there was. I
played Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, football, softball,
rugby, etc. I even started to help coach. I just couldn't get
enough.

Lots of people say that
girls just don't have what it takes to play hockey and I
tell them, just watch us!

Playing, making new friends and having
so much fun was and still is the reason I have kept so active.
Lots of people say that girls just don't have what it takes to
play Hockey and I tell them, just watch us!
I have dreams and goals just like everyone
does and I plan on reaching them and having a great time in the
process. If we allow people to tell us what we are capable of
accomplishing, sometimes we will find ourselves believing less
then the real truth.
Thank you CAAWS Grant-A-Week for helping
me out!
Long live sports.
