Grant-A-Week WINNER
Maple Creek Figure Skating Club

The Maple Creek Figure Skating Club hosted a Millennium Competition for our skaters and skaters from the surrounding region on Sunday, January 16, 2000. The competition was a great success with over 50 skaters taking part. We had hoped to have more skaters, but those who were there certainly enjoyed the day.

The participants ranged from CanSkate Level 1 to Junior Bronze, and in age from 3 to 15. All skaters were invited to enter one or both of the events in each level - Elements and Spin, Spiral, Jump FreeSkate for the CanSkate levels, and Elements and FreeSkate for the C.F.S.A. levels. Most of the skaters took part in both events.

We were very fortunate to have a great number of volunteers help with the day. The volunteers were mostly parents, with some ex-skaters and other interested people assisting as well. The judges and accountants are volunteer as well, and some traveled up to 450 kilometers to stand out beside the cold ice all day. These people spend a great deal of their leisure time working at figure skating competitions and/or test days, with only a small mileage cheque and a big thank-you to show for the day.

A tradition in skating is to throw momentos onto the ice after a skater has completed a successful solo, and a local business got involved, bringing a supply of flowers, Beanie Babies and other items that could be purchased and thrown to your favorite skater. This was a great advertisement for the business, as well as filling a need that the club would have had to find more volunteers to operate if the business had not done so.

The CAAWS-Nike Grant-a-Week Program was acknowledged through the day by the announcer, was displayed on our Sponsors board and acknowledged in the local papers with the Thank-yous.

The Maple Creek Figure Skating Club works hard to offer the sport of figure skating to as many participants as possible. This sport can be very expensive, due to the requirement of qualified coaches, ice time and equipment.

Our club, through many volunteer hours, is able to keep the registration costs as low as possible for both the regularly skating season and for events such as the sompetition.

We are very grateful the CAAWS-Nike Grant-a-Week Program for assisting us in our quest to offer a high quality, fun sporting experience that will encourage more girls to get and remain involved with sport in general and figure skating in particular.
