My name is Jordan Ludington, I am 18 years old and
the sport that I love doing is curling.I am a member of a competitive
curling team and although this is not my first year curling it
is my first year curling with my new team.
Through my years as
a curler I have had great experiences that will last me
a lifetime and gained a number of friends.
Many people do not know what curling is so for those
of you who don't, here is my brief explanation. Think of a shuffleboard
that's made of ice and about half the size of a hockey rink. There
are four members on a team and each of them throws two rocks.
As one player throws two other players try to ensure the rock
gets to the desired place, usually as close to the centre of the
house (circles at the other end of the sheet), and this is achieved
by sweeping the rock. By the end of the game you want to be the
team with the most points and thus be the winner.
I started curling when I was six, but did not find
it that interesting so I quit. When I was twelve years old I decided
I wanted to try it again and since then I have been training hard.
My training involves curling regularly in a league with my team
and attending practices throughout the week depending on what
competition we are preparing for.
Another important part of our training does not
involve going on the ice at all, but involves meeting to discuss
strategy and mental preparation. As a curler I have participated
in three provincial championships and finished second twice. I
have also attended a provincial training camp, which draws coaches
and curlers from around the globe. I am also a member of my school
curling team, which has participated in OFSAA (Ontario Secondary
School Provincial Championships) the past two years. Although
we fell just short of making it to the provincials this year,
we set that as our goal for the next year and have learned a lot
from our successful and less successful competitors.
On my competitive team I am playing lead, the position
I am accustomed to playing, while on the school team I am playing
skip. This is a new experience for me, as I have not had much experience
playing this position before. I consider this an exciting challenge
and so far this season everything is going well. Besides enjoying
all of the success our team has had so far this year I enjoy curling
because of all the opportunities it provides me with. These include
such things as traveling and meeting international curlers and
going to training camps.
I love curling. It is a great sport and I enjoy
the company of the girls on my team. We all get along really well
and we have common goals and interests. I have found curling particularly
meaningful because of all the experiences I have had in connection
with the sport and the great people I have met.
I plan to give this money to my parents, as they
are the ones who support me in all aspects of my curling and have
paid for all my expenses. In addition to thanking my parents for
their support I want to thank my team for their determination
