Last year I was one of the lucky few from my school
who went to the 12 km Bloomsday Road Race in Spokane, Washington.
It was an experience of a lifetime that I shared with seven of
my peers. I knew two of them at the time but not very well, the
other five I had seen around the school once or twice. We quickly
got to know each other and stuck by each other the whole trip.
It was the first time I felt that I was truly part of something
outside of school.
As soon as we got everything
arranged at the hotel, we got together to do a short practice
run. The beautiful sites of the mountains, river, and the houses
in the area mesmerized all of us. After the run we got together
and talked about the places we wanted to eat while we were in
the States. It was surprising to find out we wanted to eat at
the same places, even though we had the choice to split up and
eat anywhere in the area. That night we hung out in the hot tub
and then we all went shopping together.
When it came to race
day we wished each other luck and said encouraging words.
When the race started we split into small groups.
The group I was with was very encouraging. If one of us started
to slow down we would cheer each other on. If one of us stopped,
we would all stop and patiently wait until that person was ready
to continue. We had dressed warm for the cold, rainy weather but
at times got hot so to help keep each other cool we had a few
water fights along the way.
Although Bloomsday was really
exhausting, the view, the satisfaction of finishing the race and
the people you meet and learn about make it worth the effort.
Those of us who went will never forget our trip to Bloomsday and
we all still talk about it with each other.
I hope I will have the chance
to share my experience with those who are going for the first
time this year and for those who are returning from last year
I hope to give them more memories to think of in the years to
come. I know we will always remember how much fun we had.
Sincerely,
Amanda Michaud
