The St. Albert Women's Soccer League

akasane designThe St. Albert Women's Soccer League has been in operation since 1995. The league had catered to younger women coming out of youth soccer, and some older women bold enough to play with the younger ladies. On March 2000 the league took a bold step by starting up a women's classic league (over 35's). Adverts were placed in the St. Albert Gazette and Saint City News newspapers and over 130 ladies responded. The respondents were asked about their previous soccer experience and this information was used to create six evenly balanced teams. The six teams were the Avengers, Grey Wolves, Old Odd Balls, Still Kickin', The Bluze and Joey's Girls Only. akasane design

Many of the ladies who signed up in the inaugural year had never played soccer before. However, they had a good idea how the game should be played as they had watched their children participate in the sport.

The year 2001 saw the same six teams take part in their second season. It is only a matter of time before the women's classic league increases in size. One of the major spin offs for these classic teams has been the after game camaraderie, the making of new friendships and a tremendous team spirit.

Thank you CAAWS and NIKE for the support of our Classic League. This grant will be used to promote classic women's soccer in St. Albert.
