Grant-A-Week WINNER
Healthy Lundar Body Confidence Workshop

Our Body Confidence Workshop was held in Lundar, Manitoba on October 12, 2001. Approximately 100 girls participated ranging in age from 10 to 18 years old; they came from both Eriksdale and Lundar Schools. The event started at 9:00am and went to 3:00pm.

The girls were divided into four groups according to age level, and rotated through the different events throughout the day. There was a committee member and a teacher assigned to each group. The events included WENDO (Women's Self defence) for the older students, and journal making for the younger students. The physical activities included field Hockey, Hip-Hop Dance and Aerobic Kickboxing.

Our keynote speaker was Shawnee Scatliff, the CAAWS chairperson from Manitoba, and her message was inspirational to the young women.

The girls and adults had a great day and students who are known to suffer from low self-esteem and who were debating on whether to participate or not, could not wait to get back to the workshops after lunch. Comments on the evaluations were:

" Awesome! " " Hip-Hop rules! " " I loved it! "

I think for myself the greatest sign of success was to see the girls really getting into the physical fitness and not worrying about sweating; instead they were having fun and laughing! The planning committee gave each student a gift bag, which contained the following:
- a survivor kit
- a Girls@Play, Girls Rule ruler
- a girls pledge
- a notepad
- an inspirational poem
- an eraser or tattoo

The school has also incorporated the day's events into a video that will be used for school promotional purposes at the Parent-Teacher night.

Thank you for sponsoring our event and encouraging young girls to participate in sport and physical activity.
