Grant-A-Week WINNER
Queen's University Sailing Team

QST girls out on the town! L-R: Kate Lunau, Kyla Brown, Olivia Simpson, Erin Hindley, Kate Thompson, Sarah Bury.

The Queen's Women Sailing Team is part of the overall racing team that competes for Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. We requested this grant to help with the costs of competing in women's only events that are run by the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association.

Our university takes part in the United States college sailing circuit because there are very few sailing schools in Canada, and we therefore travel quite far each weekend to sail in the various regattas.

We have attended one women's regatta so far this year, at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Five of our members competed in three divisions, sailing Flying Juniors, 420's and Radials. We placed 11th out of 17 boats and our Radial competitor placed fourth in her fleet!

Our next major regatta is the district championship at the beginning of November. We hope to qualify through that regatta to compete at the Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championship, which will take place the weekend after.

After a short winter break, our sailing season will resume at the beginning of March. Our goal for the spring season is to sail hard, sail fast, and qualify for the college nationals, which are in Hawaii!

The picture we have included is from our winter break last year. During our reading week, we traveled down to Charleston, South Carolina to train with the College of Charleston team.

We would like to thank CAAWS and Nike for their support of our team.
