Grant-A-Week WINNER
Carrie Jeune - Hockey

I have just recently been informed I am the lucky recipient of a grant through the CAAWS Nike Grant A Week Program. I can't tell you how excited I am at this information! akasane designI play hockey for Campbell River's Sgt O's senior women's hockey team. We are the only women's hockey team in town. So, as you can imagine we do a lot of traveling all over Vancouver Island and tournaments on the lower mainland.

The grant I received will mainly be used for gas, hotels and registration fees.

A little bit about my sport history. I've done a huge amount of spectating of various sports. As a mother of 3 and with a very active husband, I was a dedicated fan for 13 years or more. For years I teased my husband and his hockey team that I would play hockey, if there were a women's team! Last year his team informed me that there was a women's team in town and it was time to eat my words! They took great pleasure in seeing me squirm, they of course didn't know that I couldn't skate even in figure skates. I confessed - they laughed and then invited me out to hamburger hockey with the great intention of teaching me everything they knew! They were awesome, they picked me up when I fell, and they knocked me down when they didn't know it was me behind them and picked me up again! They even come out and watch and cheer for my women's hockey team now - talk about role reversal! I love them; the hamburger hockey guys are the best!

Last fall I joined the women's hockey team. Still not able to stop, cross over my feet and the boards were my best friend but boy could I get in people's way, my team or the opponents! These ladies are great not only did they welcome me but they also asked my husband to help coach. I am now a little speed demon on the ice, I can stop, without the boards, turn, and cross over my feet and I'm improving at handling the puck. I'm the person that assists a lot of goals; I like digging in the corners and feeding it out to those who can shoot it! All things in good time! hehehe..

I encourage any and all women to get out there and try, even if you are not the star on the team you'll have a great time and be better off for the experience. Not to mention the physical benefits, thank you CAAWS!
