Ottawa Fury Women's Elite
Soccer Team- Soccer

May 13, 2000 will mark a great achievement for women's soccer in the National Capital area. This is the day that the Ottawa Fury Women's Elite Soccer Team will be making its debut in the prestigious W1-League.

Over the past three years many of the team members have played together in the summer with the South Nepean United Spirits Soccer Club, and in the fall with the University of Ottawa. Among their numerous successes, several are notable. Playing with the South Nepean United Spirits, the women have won three Ontario Cup Provincial Championships (1997-1999) and two National Titles (1997, 1998). Making history along the way, the team is the only one, male or female, to have won three consecutive Ontario Cup Championships.

Many of the players were also members of the University of Ottawa team that won the CIAU (Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union) National Championship in 1996. Furthermore, both the Club and University teams have won several ACT (Associated Canadian Travellers) Awards.

The selection committee, which consists of members of the Ottawa Sports Media, chose the University of Ottawa as Team of the Year in 1996, and the South Nepean United Spirits as the Team of the Year in 1997 and 1998. In addition, the University of Ottawa received the prestigious CAAWS Award.

The United Soccer Leagues W1-League, based in Tampa, Florida consists primarily of American teams, with the Northern Conference (Ottawa, Laval, Toronto and Rochester) housing the two other Canadian teams. The Fury will also meet other American teams such as Boston, New Jersey, Springfield, and New Hampshire.

The team is very excited to take on the challenge of playing in this league. Two members of the Ottawa Fury just finished competing with the Canadian National Team at the Algarve Cup, in Portugal.

The presence of this elite team provides the opportunity for other members of to be scouted for their chance to represent Canada at the international level.

In conclusion, the Ottawa Fury Women's Elite Soccer Team would like to thank Nike and CAAWS for their support. We look forward to continuing to support the improvement of girls and sport in Canada.
