Grant-A-Week WINNER Youth Golf Mentorship -
Brandon Community Centre
The City of Brandon Community Parks and Recreation
Department held it's second annual Golf Mentorship Program for
youth at risk. The program offered youth girls at risk the opportunity
to diversify their knowledge in specific sport skills with this
program's focus on golf. Through the Golf Mentorship Program our
goal was to reach out to those youth in need of support and direction,
and work with existing businesses and/or organizations to provide
quality mentorship programs which are affordableThis
program was more than affordable, it was actually a no-fee 6 week
program where 6 selected girls were given weekly instruction from
two local golf professionals. During the program the girls learned
the rules of golf, golf etiquette, and proper golf play techniques,
while working in a structured environment. Although with this
program we were focussing on the sport of golf we were also teaching
these youth lifelong skills of discipline, commitment, responsibility,
teamwork, and fair play as they began to increase their self-esteem,
and were given the opportunity to learn a lifelong sport.
We feel that these skills were just as important
as actually learning how to play golf. During the program the
positive effects that the girls were experiencing were very obvious,
not to mention that the girls often chose to stay at the facility
and practice for up to 2 hours after each session for their own
enjoyment. This was a very rewarding program for the girls to
participate in, and for this reason we applied for this grant.
We want to allow other youth girls at risk the
same opportunity, and possible life change. This grant will be
used to help subsidize our 6 week golf lesson for 6 youth girls,
and will also be put towards purchasing two clubs for the girls
so they can continue on with playing golf after the program is
complete.
We feel that it is imperative that the girls be
given the tools to continue on with this lifelong sport.
Lastly, we wanted to inform you that the CAAWS/Nike
Girls @ Play Grant not only assisted 6 girls learn the game of
golf, it also taught them how to become better people, and gave
the girls the opportunity to feel better about themselves, and
about their lives.
Thank you very much CAAWS/Nike for this great opportunity.
Sincerely,
Tanya Angus
