Grant-A-Week WINNER
Kahnawake Minor Hockey
Kahnawake is a Mohawk Reserve located on the south
shore of the St. Lawrence Seaway, ten miles from Montreal, Quebec.Kahnawake
Minor Hockey started a girls' division in the 1999-2000 season.
This being only our second year involved in girls' hockey, we
are still in our infancy stage. We have grown from having two
teams to having three this season. Our
goal for the 2001-2002 season is to have four teams in the following
divisions: 1 Atom (8-11 yrs.), 2 Bantam (12-15 yrs.) and 1 Junior
(16-20 yrs.). Although we are located in Kahnawake, our girls
are not only from here but from the surrounding communities of
Chateauguay, St-Martine and Mercier.
Our association is trying to build an interest for
girls' hockey by providing a teaching environment to promote healthy
lifestyles, team spirit and the fundamentals of the sport.
Our emphasis is on having fun as well as getting
the girls to express themselves through athletics. The program
enhances support for the girls through family participation and
having fun vs. competition and pressure.
Teaching healthier eating habits and drug and alcohol
awareness is and always will be an essential part of the program.
This season we are hosting our first all-girls hockey
tournament. We are expecting sixteen teams to compete, eight teams
in the Atom division and eight in the Bantam division. Each team
will be guaranteed to play two games and will have a chance to
advance to the finals. An MVP will be awarded for each game and
refreshments and snacks will be served.
