My name is Stephanie Wade. As a 17-year-old living
in St. John's, Newfoundland all sports that I play are at a competitive
level. By receiving this grant it will not only be useful for
me but, for my parents as well. Throughout my athletic career
I've been involved in soccer, basketball, volleyball, track and
field, skiing, gymnastics, swimming and baseball. Only a few of
these sports have taken me a step further.
Summer of 98' I played provincial
basketball and won the bronze medal in the Atlantic "All Star"
tournament. I just finished playing senior basketball, senior
volleyball, senior soccer and track at my high school, Holy Heart
of Mary. In Junior High I was Athlete of the Year. In Grade 9
I received M.S.P for junior volleyball and this year in grade
11 I received M.S.P for track and senior volleyball.
Presently, I have made the Canada Games soccer team
and was asked to be on the track team as well. In track I beat
the provincial record holder coming first in the 100 metre and
200 metre sprints at Regionals. At Provincials I won gold in my
events and beat the provincial record.
On the other hand soccer has practically been my
life. I started playing soccer at the age of seven and have gone
to four nationals placing fourth at each championship nationally
as a member of St. John's Minor Soccer Club. With my provincial
17 team we won the gold in the Atlantic "All Star" tournament
last year in New Brunswick. Recently I made the Under 17 Provincial
Team (two years in a row), Canada Games' soccer, the track team,
and the 17 "A" team (for St. John's).
In June my provincial team is travelling to Winnipeg
for the All Star nationals. In August the Canada Games team is
travelling to Halifax and has planned two trips for next winter.
If the tournaments do not clash, I will be going to Calgary again
in August to the Legion Track Meet and this year with our St.
John's team our Nationals will be held in our hometown, St. John's,
Newfoundland.
I am scared that I left something out! As you can
see, I am going to be one busy girl this summer and throughout
the next year. My parents are going crazy trying to find ways
to fundraise for all of the trips I will be going on and we really
do not have the money to pay for all of these trips.
In reading this you might think " she can't be involved
in all of those events and she has exaggerated a little too much".
This is who I am and what I do and what I LOVE. I just had to
find a way of helping my parents and myself because next year
it is going to be even harder on me because of all of the sports
I am involved in. Plus fundraising, academics and on top of all
that I was voted President of my high school for next year.
