Nike Youth Achievement Award
Sharlynn Tymchyna

Nike Canada Ltd. and the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS) are pleased to announce that Sharlynn Tymchyna of Cranbrook, British Columbia, is this year's recipient of the 2002 Girls@Play Nike Youth Achievement Award. Seventeen year-old Sharlynn is an exemplary young woman who devotes much of her time to encouraging other girls and young women to get involved in sport. An avid figure skater, she contributes to her club by teaching both private and group lessons and choreographing club productions. She also volunteers when needed and mentors young skaters by example. In addition to her club involvement, Sharlynn is also very active in the city of Cranbrook Leisure Department. She coaches in the City's existing skating program and developed a proposal to create a new program called "Learn 2 Skate".akasane design
Following the success of "Learn 2 Skate" Sharlynn created a skating promotional day with the city of Cranbrook Leisure Department for all skating programs in the community.

"Sharlynn promotes girls' and women's sport by example, by teaching, by volunteering and by creating sport and fitness programs for girls and women. Her dedication to her training and skating, to her coaching and mentoring and to her community at large has made her a leader. " said Debbie Payne, Sharlynn's skating coach and nominator.

"We are encouraged by the quality of the nominations that came from across the country and are happy to be able to recognize Sharlynn for her outstanding contribution to girls and women in sport," said Patricia Zeedick, President of Nike Canada Ltd.

Sharlynn was thrilled to be chosen as this year's recipient. "As a coach and a role model, my philosophy is to recognize and utilize talent and desire, to build self-esteem and confidence, and to develop potential while fostering the love of sport. I love to skate and if love of sport is the only thing I instill in athletes, I will be satisfied."

Sharlynn receives a trip for two to the 29th Annual Canadian Sport Awards, held tonight in Toronto where she will be presented with her award and a $500 Nike prize package. A donation of Nike equipment will also be made to a sporting group in the Cranbrook area on behalf of Sharlynn.
