2001 Canadian Ringette Championships

Alberta and Ontario were the opening day powerhouses at the Tim Hortons 2001 Canadian Ringette Championships in southeastern New Brunswick today, with teams from those provinces going undefeated in all three divisions.

Over 500 athletes representing 30 teams from all provinces except Newfoundland and the territories are competing for national titles in three divisions - Junior (ages 14-15), Belle (ages 16-18) and Open (ages 19 and over).Round-robin play will continue throughout the week with finals in all three divisions scheduled for Saturday, April 7. Highlights in today's Junior competition included Winnipeg's Angela Simpson scoring the overtime goal to give Manitoba a 6-5 win over British Columbia. In other overtime play, Ottawa's Katie Lugg scored the tiebreaker to give her Ontario Juniors a 4-3 win over Saskatchewan. In Belle competition, Regina's Daina Haubrich led her team to victory twice today after posting two goals and two assists in a 5-3 win over Quebec and three goals and an assist in a 7-0 win over New Brunswick. Other high scorers included Quebec's Mylene Cleroux (St-Constant), who posted three goals in a 10-3 win over the New Brunswick Host team. In the Open division, Calgary's Tamara Anderson recorded a shutout against the New Brunswick Host team, with her teammate JP Paradowski (Calgary) picking up three goals and an assist. Later in the day, Calgary's Lisa Brown scored two goals and an assist to give Alberta a 4-2 win over Manitoba. In an 8-1 win over New Brunswick, Winnipeg's Suzanne Goulet posted three goals and an assist. This year's championships represent the 23rd annual competition for the sport. At last year's championships, held in Prince George, British Columbia, Alberta captured gold in the Junior, Belle and Intermediate divisions, while Ontario took the gold in the Deb division. The 2002 Canadian Ringette Championships will be held in Regina, Saskatchewan. Competition continues Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. (AST).
