Moncton, New Brunswick –
Alberta remains undefeated after the second
day of play at the Tim Hortons 2001 Canadian
Ringette Championships being held this week
in southeastern New Brunswick. Competition today
also saw Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and
New Brunswick posting their first wins of the
championships.
The New Brunswick
Host team is yet to pick up a win.
Highlights
in today’s Junior competition included British
Columbia downing previously undefeated Ontario
5-4. British Columbia also posted an 11-4
win over Nova Scotia, with Burnaby’s Solana
Green and Squamish’s Erica Fletcher posting
three goals and four assists each. Nova Scotia
came back later in the day to post their first
win with a 3-0 shutout over the New Brunswick
Host team. Dartmouth’s Jamie Lee Martin had
a hand in all the scoring with a goal and
two assists.
Along with
Alberta, Manitoba remains undefeated in the
Junior division. Belle competition saw Ontario
posting their first loss in this division
after being downed 6-5 by Manitoba. Winnipeg’s
Chelsea Hansen and Cheryl Prosser split the
goals and also had an assist each. Belles
from Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island
captured their first wins today after downing
the New Brunswick Host team 7-5 and New Brunswick
3-2 respectively. Nova Scotia wasn’t as successful
earlier in the day when they were shut out
7-0 by Quebec. Quebec’s Julie Primard (Delson)
came away with three goals and an assist in
the game.
In the Open
division, Calgary’s Heather Barton scored
an exciting overtime goal to down Saskatchewan
5-4. The Nova Scotia Open team posted their
first win after downing the New Brunswick
Host team 5-4. Lower Sackville’s Shari Boudreau
posted two goals and an assist in the game.
New Brunswick also came away with their first
win in the Open division after downing Prince
Edward Island 11-5. New Brunswick’s Courtney
Griffin (New Maryland) claimed three goals
and two assists. Ontario remains undefeated
in the Open division after posting an 8-1
win over New Brunswick and a 7-1 win over
Manitoba.
Over 500
athletes representing 30 teams from all provinces
except Newfoundland and the territories are
competing for national titles in three divisions
- Junior (ages 14-15), Belle (ages 16-18)
and Open (ages 19 and over).
Round-robin
play will continue throughout the week with
finals in all three divisions scheduled for
Saturday, April 7. This year’s championships
represent the 23rd annual competition for
the sport.
