Amanda McCormack earns fifth gold at Age Group Nationals

CALGARY – Amanda McCormack of Kingston, Ont., collected her fifth gold medal on Saturday at the Age Group Nationals swimming competition with a victory in the 200 backstroke in the girls 12 and under age class.

So far this week McCormack has also posted wins in the 200 individual medley, 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke and 400 freestyle. Other winners in the same age group Saturday were Amy Sun of West Vancouver in the 200 freestyle, Charlotte Philpotts of North Vancouver in the 100 breaststroke and Olivia Feschuk of Hamilton in the 100 butterfly.

Marni Oldershaw and Sinead Russell, both of Oakville, each earned a fourth gold winning their 200 backstroke races in the girls 13 and 15 age groups respectively.

World junior championship medallist Amanda Reason of Windsor, Ont., collected a third victory in the girls 14 age group placing first in the 100 breaststroke and Michelle Williams of North York is also up to three gold after winning the 100 butterfly in the 16-18 age group.

On the men’s side, world junior team member Curtis Lutsch of Calgary collected his second victory of the meet taking the 100 butterfly in the 17-18 age group. Jeremy Ramshaw of Mississauga, Ont., Zachary Somjen of Vancouver and Dominique Massie-Martel of Pointe-Claire, Que., were first time winners this week in the age group taking the 200 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle respectively.

Up to three gold following victories on Saturday are Chris Manning of Toronto in the 16 age group after a win in the 100 butterfly, Chad Bobrosky of Calgary after victory in the 200 freestyle in the 15 age group and Kevin Bustamante of Montreal who collected wins in both the 200 backstroke and 200 freestyle in the 13 and under age group.

In the combined club standings, Pointe-Claire Swim Club stands first with Cascade Swim Club of Calgary second and Etobicoke Swimming third.
