Ads featuring
women win awards
The Advertising Women
of New York gave their third annual "Good,
Bad, and Ugly" awards aimed at improving how
women are portrayed in advertising.

Mia Hamm and Michael Jordan in Gatorade ad
Winning the "Grand Good"
award was an ad for Gatorade featuring sports heroes
Mia Hamm and Michael Jordanin one-on-one competition.
They take each other on in basketball, soccer, fencing,
tennis, running and judo. During the filming
of the judo sequence, Mia surprised everyone by
slipping in close to Michael and easily flipping
him over her shoulder. The set was silent.
Michael got to his feet, smiled and said, "Now
there's an example of some great acting." For

An ad campaign for Adidas, which celebrated
the players of the World Cup in humourous childhood
flashbacks also won a "Grand Good" award.
The "Grand Bad" award went
to the Frito-Lay unit of PepsiCo Inc. for a television
spot for Doritos. The ad shows a library packed
with male human anatomy students gawking at model
Ali Kandryas she walks by in a revealing dress.
Lynne Collins, manager of communications
at FCB in New York and co-chair of the 1999 awards,
says the ads were judged by a panel of 26 professional
women from the communications industry, as well
as one 18-year-old student, who observed the portrayal
of women in a series of ads and "basically
answered the question 'Would you want your kid seeing
this ad?'"
