FitSpirit seminars
promote the benefits of PHYSICAL ACTIVITY to young girls
Toronto – The FitSpirit program is getting ready to
launch its first round of in-school seminars. The goal of
these seminars is to inform teen girls about the benefits
of physical activity. According to the chosen format, a
renowned athlete will take the stage during each seminar
to discuss the positive effects sports have had on her life.
According to Claudine Labelle, director and founder of
FitSpirit, “The welcome we have received from schools
almost exceeds our expectations. It’s important to
note that statistics on the radical decrease in physical
activity among young people in general, but especially among
young girls, are alarming.” Recently, Statistics Canada
revealed that the rate of obesity among young people between
12 and 17 years old has tripled over the past 25 years.
As a result, FitSpirit is fighting against a problem that
is becoming increasingly more alarming.
The first school that FitSpirit will be visiting is Lakeshore
Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke, Ontario. Other schools
in the Greater Toronto area will follow before FitSpirt
begins the Quebec leg of its tour in the Greater Montreal
area in May. In all, just over 5,000 high school-aged girls
will be visited during the first cycle of activity.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and Quebec are
proud to support FitSpirit. They will take advantage of
the school seminars to promote awareness and education,
explaining how the risks of smoking, poor diet and a lack
of physical activity can have a negative effect on our health.
