Stacey’s parents, Cheryl and Ned Levitt of Toronto selected the 1999 recipients from over 75 applications. They believe that these individuals and groups truly exemplify Stacey’s ideals and qualities. Each recipient will receive $500 and a copy of “I am a Rose”, a collection of poetry written by Stacey.
Sarah Daitch of Fort Smith, NWT;
Andrea Doepker of Saskatoon, SK;
Tara Mulder of Toronto, ON;
Angie Ross of Kitchener, ON; and
the Ottawa Banshees Women’s Sports Club
After reviewing all of the nominations Mrs. Levitt said “We are very proud of these talented Canadian women and their varied sports and academic and community accomplishments. Much like Stacey was, these young athletes are highly motivated, enthusiastic, and striving to be the best they can be. We wish them all much success in their chosen athletic and academic pursuits and in continuing to make positive things happen while at the same time providing role models for Canada’s future young women athletes.”
Sarah Daitch
Student council president Sarah Daitch is a leader and role model for others in her school. She is an honour student, participates in the yearbook club, newspaper, drama club and school band while cross country skiing at the national level. “Furthering my education and expanding my horizons are priorities for me, and I am very excited about this opportunity,” said Sarah, who will continue to pursue her goal of skiing at the international level when she begins her studies at the University of Calgary this fall.
Andrea Doepker
As Canadian record holder in the Juvenile and Junior pole vault, it is safe to say that Andrea Doepker has excelled at her new sport. Nagging back problems forced her out of gymnastics after training in the sport for nine years. Since starting to pole vault three years ago, Andrea has made her mark, provincially, nationally and internationally. She was selected to the Canadian National Junior Team and represented Canada at the Caribbean All Stars in the Cayman Islands. Andrea is an honour student and actively participates in SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) and PAALS (Physical Activity for Active Living). “I am honored to accept this scholarship in memory of Stacey,” said Andrea. “I love sports, like she did, and will train hard to accomplish my goals and dreams.”
Tara Mulder
Tara Mulder is entering her final year of studies at the University of Toronto and is an avid mountain biker. Less than a year ago, she entered her first Ontario Cup beginner race and has already accumulated enough points to move up to the expert category. She is also preparing to become a Level I coach and constantly looks for ways to be a role model and encourages other girls to join her sport. “Stacey was a friend of mine. I feel very proud to be taking on a new sport, and I know she would be excited for me,” said Tara. “She lived her short life to the max. It saddens me that she died with still so much potential. I stand here, alive and full to the same potential, and to receive this scholarship means so much. ”
Angie Ross
Angie Ross is an energetic and dedicated student athlete who has just endured one of life’s greatest tragedies, the loss of a parent to a car accident. At this time Angie continues to focus on her track and cross-country running as she prepares to enter her first year of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo. “I view myself as a role model for younger women never allowing anything to stop at me,” says Angie. “My post secondary education plans and future personal goals personify my commitment to women and sport, a cause I will always support.”
Ottawa Banshees
The Ottawa Banshees is a multi-sport club that has been supporting the participation of women in sport since 1979. The Club encourages women ages 16 to 40+ to participate in sport at a competitive level and takes a holistic approach to athlete development by providing opportunities for members to volunteer, coach, referee and socialize. “We are thrilled to receive recognition from an organization that realizes the importance of what we have been trying to achieve as women in sport for the past 20 years,” said Banshee’s communications director Kathryn Featherstone.
