1. CAAWS PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE
Newcomer
On the Move Program Leader Meeting - For two days
in December, Newcomer On the Move Program Leaders and Coordinators
from Brampton, Hamilton and Ottawa, and representatives from
the new community program hosts in Halifax and Winnipeg came
together in Toronto ON. This meeting provided a great opportunity
for Program Leaders from communities across the country to
connect and share program challenges, solutions and key learnings.
Also included in the two day agenda was a Fundamental Movement
Skills workshop facilitated by Coaches Association of Ontario,
and a screening of the documentary It’s a Girl’s
World which was followed by a discussion on social bullying.
Thank you to those who participated!

Girl’s World, visit: http://www.onf-nfb.gc.ca/eng/collection/film/?id=51404
Women 55-70+ Ontario Pilot Projects: New Ideas for
Increasing Physical Activity and Sport - A number
of pilot projects are taking place across Ontario aimed at
increasing physical activity and sport participation for women
55-70+. These test sites are trying out new marketing ideas,
adaptations and activities based on what the women told them
they wanted to do. For more information on over 35 pilot projects,
either recently completed or currently underway, visit: http://www.caaws.ca/women55plus/pilot_projects/index.cfm.
Special thanks to the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion
and Sport Healthy Communities and Sport for More Fund, and
to the Ontario Trillium Foundation (an agency of the Government
of Ontario).
Lunch and Learn - CAAWS welcomed more than
35 participants at its Lunch and Learn event hosted in Ottawa
ON on December 1, 2011, as part of its Women and Leadership
Program. Shelley Callaghan, Project Manager for CAAWS’
Physical Activity and Sport for Women 55-70+ project, shared
the main challenges and solutions to participation for this
age group, lessons learned through community-based pilot projects,
and practical resources for sport and physical activity organizations.
Those in attendance enjoyed the presentation and left with
the tools and inspiration to take action on developing, enhancing
or adapting services and programs for women 55-70+.
2. CELEBRATING CAAWS’ 30TH ANNIVERSARY
- PROFILING MILESTONES IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
2011 marks CAAWS’ 30th anniversary. To celebrate, we
are showcasing key milestones, and the women behind them,
that have contributed to CAAWS’ vision of an equitable
sport and physical activity system. In this final month, we
are taking a closer look at our organization, the Canadian
Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical
Activity (CAAWS).
Before CAAWS came into existence, Canada’s sport system
did very little to promote and support girls and women. There
were low levels of participation, inequitable distribution
of practice times, few women in leadership positions as volunteers
or administrators, virtually no women in coaching, and it
was rare to see a story about women athletes in the sports
section of the local newspaper.

3. NEW RESOURCE: ACTIVE AFTER SCHOOL
PROGRAMS FOR GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN – POLICY AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The
after school time period, from 3:00pm – 6:00pm, is a
key opportunity to encourage healthy choices amongst children
and youth. Earlier this year, CAAWS hosted consultations with
program providers and decision-makers to identify persisting
and emerging barriers to girls’ and young women’s
participation, and discuss essential components of quality
programs. Based on the consultations, the document describes
a vision and strategic directions for active after school
programs for girls and young women. The policy was developed
for community, provincial/territorial and national level organizations
to use when considering the design and delivery of active
after school programming.
The consultations and subsequent policy document is part
of CAAWS’ involvement in the Canadian Active After School
Partnership (CAASP), funded by the Public Health Agency of
Canada.
