1. CAAWS PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE
CAAWS’
30th Anniversary Celebratory Dinner – CAAWS
brought together its past chairs, provincial Women and Sport
and Physical Activity organizations, and current board members
and personnel, for an evening of recognition, laughter, and
reminiscence in celebration of its 30th anniversary. Women
in attendance shared stories and memories related to their
involvement with CAAWS, reconnected with familiar faces, met
new friends, and learned more about CAAWS’ current projects
and activities. CAAWS is very pleased to recognize the amazing
women who have demonstrated extraordinary dedication, hard
work and a life-long commitment to gender equity in sport
and physical activity.
The event was held following the 2011 Petro-Canada Sport
Leadership sportif Conference in Toronto, and prior to CAAWS’
board of directors and annual general meetings.

is rolling-out its Newcomer On the Move project across the
country. The CIC funded project will sustain existing programs

and delivery of Newcomer On the Move programs in 2012-2013
and 2013-2014.
2. CELEBRATING CAAWS’ 30TH ANNIVERSARY
- PROFILING MILESTONES IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
2011 marks CAAWS’ 30th anniversary. To celebrate, we
are showcasing key milestones, and the women behind them,
that have contributed to CAAWS’ vision of an equitable
sport and physical activity system. This month, we are profiling
one of CAAWS’ long-standing programs: On the Move –
Increasing Sport and Physical Activity Opportunities for Inactive
Girls and Young Women.
On the Move is CAAWS' national initiative to increase opportunities
for inactive girls and young women (ages 9-18) to participate
in fun-filled, female-only, recreational sport and physical
activity. On the Move works at the organizational level to
address social and systemic barriers and create positive environments
where girls and young women can fully realize the benefits
available through sport and physical activity.Since the initiative
was launched in 1994, it has provided a foundation for much
of CAAWS’ work promoting enhanced opportunities for
girls and young women.

WOMEN 55-70+ IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
CAAWS

Thursday, December 1, from 12-2 p.m. at the
RA Centre in Ottawa ON.
This month’s Lunch and Learn will feature CAAWS’
successful Physical Activity and Sport for Women 55-70+ project,
sharing the main challenges and solutions to participation
for this age group, lessons learned through community-based
pilot projects, and practical resources for sport and physical
activity organizations. Project manager, Shelley Callaghan,
will share stories and lead a discussion that will inspire
you to take action on developing, enhancing or adapting services
and programs for women 55-70+.
If you live in the Ottawa region and would like to attend,

4. CAAWS NEEDS YOU TO NOMINATE A LEADER
FOR THE 2011 CANADIAN MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN IN SPORT AND
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LIST
Every
year CAAWS recognizes 20 outstanding women who have made a
significant impact in sport and physical activity in their
community, nation-wide or on the international scene. CAAWS
is seeking your input for its Most Influential Women List
for 2011, which will be announced in January 2012.
Who is an influential woman? She is a powerful woman who
is influencing sport or physical activity in 2011. She may
be an athlete who has achieved national or international recognition.
Or she is an executive who has led an organization with a
clear, defined vision. Perhaps she is a volunteer who has
donated countless hours to coaching or organizing. She may
be someone in the print or broadcast media who influences
coverage of girls and women in sport and physical activity.
Women previously named to the list may be nominated again.
A panel established by CAAWS will review all nominations.
They will develop the final list of the Most Influential Women
in Sport and Physical Activity for 2011. The key is her influence
in the year 2011.
Deadline for nominations is Friday, December 9, 2011.

and their desire to keep moving, eat healthy and be involved
in sport and physical activity will motivate their children
to do the same.
The training event will be take place in Toronto on Saturday,
January 21 and Sunday, January 22, 2012. For more information

6. U OF T RELEASES COMPREHENSIVE
STUDY OF GENDER EQUITY
Researchers
at the University of Toronto’s Centre for Sport Policy
Studies conducted the most comprehensive analysis of gender
equity in Canada’s interuniversity sport system, culminating
in a report entitled Gender Equity in Canadian Sport. The
results provide both good news and bad news with regard to
gender equity. The good news is that there are almost as many
Varsity teams for women (425) as there are for men (431) at
Canadian universities. The bad news is that there are disturbingly
few women in leadership positions in Canadian university sport,
with women occupying only 19% of the head coach positions,
and only 17% of the athletic director positions.
The report calls for national and regional interuniversity
sport bodies to establish stronger equity policies, to move
toward proportionality and an increased number of participation
opportunities for female athletes, and take the lead in improving
leadership opportunities for women in coaching and senior
administration.
The Centre for Sport Policy Studies intends to make this
Report the first of a biannual series, and plans to carry
out a further study of gender equity in Canadian interuniversity
sport in 2013, when gender equity may be assessed against
these baseline data. The full report can be found here: http://www.physical.utoronto.ca/Centre_for_Sport_Policy_Studies.aspx
