1. CAAWS PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE

Step Up! Speak Out! Ally Campaign for Inclusive Sport – Over the past year, CAAWS has been working with Sport BC and the 2011 North America Outgames Human Rights Conference to maximize their legacy in the local sport community. This work came to fruition this July in Vancouver when CAAWS co-hosted a day of workshops devoted to making sport more welcoming to sexual and gender diversity. Presentations and materials from CAAWS’ workshops and others are now available on CAAWS’ website.

2. CELEBRATING CAAWS’ 30TH ANNIVERSARY - PROFILING MILESTONES IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

2011 marks CAAWS’ 30th anniversary. To celebrate, we are showcasing key milestones, and the women behind them, that have contributed to CAAWS’ vision of an equitable sport and physical activity system. This month, we are profiling Canada’s three provincial organizations dedicated to increasing opportunities and encouraging girls and women to participate and lead in sport and physical activity.

ProMOTION Plus is the British Columbia organization for girls and women in physical activity and sport. Established as a non-profit society in 1990, the organization was the first provincial organization dedicated to increasing opportunities for girls and women in the sport and recreation delivery system.

Alberta’s InMotion Network is comprised of a group of energetic individuals and organizations dedicated to promoting increased physical activity opportunities for girls and women as both participants and leaders. Through networking, advocacy and education, members of the network hope to see that girls and women enjoy a balanced, healthy lifestyle through participation in a full range of physical activities in a safe and equitable environment. InMotion is a “network of networks” linking various agencies and organizations around the province of Alberta with groups of people who share their vision as advocates of girls and women in sport and physical activity.

Égale Action is a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging the participation of women of all ages in sport and physical activity, and creating an equitable sport and physical activity system in Québec. Driven by the fact that, until recently, there was no framework that supported participation of women, that was able to exert itself politically, and provide recommendations and act as a reference organization in Quebec, an idea germinated and an organization was born.

3. CAAWS RECOGNIZES FIVE YOUNG WOMEN WITH PASSION FOR SPORT AND COMMUNITY

Earlier this month, CAAWS announced the five recipients of the 2011 Stacey Levitt Women and Sport Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was established in honour of Stacey Levitt, a superior athlete and top student who was struck and killed by a car while jogging on August 30th, 1995. The recipients of this year’s award are from various regions of Canada but all share a passion for sport, serve as role models in their communities, and believe in empowering others to lead healthy, active lives.

4. WOMEN 55 TO 70+ CELEBRATE SPORTS DAY IN CANADA

On September 17th, CAAWS celebrated Sports Day in Canada with numerous events taking place across Ontario involving women 55 and over—who rarely get the spotlight shone on their active lives.

Women 55+ in Sarnia participated in a variety of different activities including line dancing, Zumba, stretch and soft yoga, and belly dancing as part of the Find Out About It Sport and Activity Expo for Women 55 and Over. In Mississauga, women 55+ played pickleball, basketball, gymnastics and badminton, and even got a chance to try fencing. In Emo, more than 40 women learned to urban pole walk, while residents from Ottawa took part in urban poling and line dancing programs launched by Let’s Get Moving. Sudbury’s Femmes Active 55+ celebrated the launch of their new Learn to Play Sports program by repelling down a cliff!

The FABS (Fabulous Active Babes) from Thunder Bay celebrated Jersey Day in Canada on September 16th with badminton and carpet bowling, and wearing sports jerseys and FABS hats. CAAWS also had a chance to rally the troops and get communities excited through a series of live interviews that took place throughout the day on CBC Radio.

CAAWS’ 2011 Sports Day in Canada efforts were designed to help break down stereotypes and barriers by showcasing female 55+ role models who are participating in sport at every level – because they love it.

6. ÉGALE ACTION AND QUÉBEC EN FORME COLLABORATE TO OFFER WORKSHOP AND TRAINING

MENTORE ACTIVE program – Égale Action, in partnership with Québec en Forme, proudly offers the Mentore Active training for girls from 15 to 17 years of age. Mentore Active consists of leadership training for girls so that they can acquire knowledge; share their experiences; explore practical ideas; and apply specific techniques in communication, conflict resolution and leadership; and this, among girls. These tools will help them to build up not only their own independence in the regular practice of physical activities, but also those of their colleagues in their school or local environment. They will become, in a way, young mentors and models to follow.

On the Move training – Égale Action, in partnership with Québec en Forme, invites you to reserve your training workshop where understanding differences makes all the difference! On the Move is an initiative to increase opportunities for inactive girls and young women (ages 9-18) to participate in sport and physical activity. On the Move workshops are half-day, interactive, issue-based sessions that provide an overview of the initiative, share best practices from across Canada, and provide "how-to" tips to increase the participation of girls and young women; relevant for everyone from programmers to policy makers

PLEASE NOTE that between September 2011 and March 2012, Égale Action is offering 15 places free of cost in the Mentore Active program and 20 free On the Move training workshops. This is on a first-come, first-served basis, so ensure that you reserve your place promptly! For information and registration, contact Marie-Claude Lamontagne (514-525-3114, ext. 3615 / mc.lamontagne@hotmail.com).
