1. CAAWS PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE
CAAWS
WOMEN AND LEADERSHIP NETWORK NOW OPEN TO MEN –
Men are important allies in achieving gender equity. CAAWS’
Women and Leadership Network is now open to both men and women.
CAAWS decided the Network would be more influential by sharing
the information and resources with men who support the active
engagement of women and girls as participants and leaders.
Men and women interested in joining the Network can click here to register – membership is FREE. Also, starting
in January, the Network News will merge with the CAAWS In
the Loop newsletter – current research, Leaders
Talk videos, and more will be featured in a Women and Leadership
section.

requires many small steps, and the importance of creating
your own challenges. CAAWS’ next Lunch and Learn is
January 23rd 2013 with Valerie Hughes
from Hockey Canada.

To support work to enhance the Canadian sport and physical
activity system and build on the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L)

seeking success stories from national, provincial/territorial
and community organizations that have increased opportunities
for women and girls to participant and/or lead. These could
include targeted Learn to Play programs, codes of conduct
to make your team more inclusive, female-only coach certification
opportunities, mentorship initiatives, and more. Success stories
will be featured online and at the 2013 CS4L Summit.
Send a description of your success story to Natalie Brett,
CAAWS Project Coordinator, via nbrett@caaws.ca.

young women. Project activities are part of CAAWS’ involvement

6. VANCOUVER PARKS BOARD “KICKS
GENDER INEQUALITY”
The Vancouver Parks Board passed a resolution to improve
leadership and participation opportunities in sport for women
and girls in time for the soccer Women's World Cup in 2015.
The decision comes after Hall of Fame soccer player, Carrie
Serwetnyk, launched a campaign called “Why
The Women's World Cup Matters,” aimed at using the global
sporting event as a catalyst to create social changes for
girls and women on and off the field. For more on Why the
Women’s World Cup Matters, and to hear the Parks Board
resolution, click here.
7. NEW REPORT ON INTERSEX
AND TRANSITIONING ATHLETES
The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) recently released
its report, Sport in Transition: Making Sport in Canada
More Responsible for Gender Inclusivity, which discusses
the needs and experiences of transgendered and intersex athletes.
The report recommends that because variations in sex development
exist, individuals should have the right to compete without
question in the gender they feel they are or have always identified
with, and emphasizes that this right to gender self-identification
carries both the privilege of inclusion and the responsibility
for fair play. Without presuming to have all the answers,
the CCES released the report to stimulate discussion within
the sport system, and more broadly within society. To download
the report click
