1. CAAWS PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE

Moving, Mentoring and Motivating Mothers to lead a Healthy Active Lifestyle – On January 21st and 22nd in Toronto ON, CAAWS brought together 23 keen women from across Ontario to become Mothers in Motion (MIM) Master Trainers. With funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, participants learned about the physical activity experiences of mothers and also received tools and information to assist them in increasing physical activity and healthy eating opportunities for mothers and their families within their communities.

Participants were trained on new MIM resources and how to facilitate a successful workshop. Trainers will then deliver MIM workshops across the province between March-June 2012; have the opportunity to coordinate and/or support MIM pilot projects in their region; and become champions for creating positive physical activity and healthy eating programs targeting mothers and their families.

2. CAAWS ANNOUNCES ITS 2012 WISE FUND RECIPIENTS

The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS) announced the 12 recipients of the Women in Sport Encouragement (WISE) Fund grants, each valued at $900.

“CAAWS is honoured to acknowledge the efforts of the WISE Fund recipients and recognize the contribution they’re making to CAAWS’ vision of an equitable sport system in which girls and women are actively engaged as participants and leaders,” said Karin Lofstrom, CAAWS Executive Director. “This year’s winners are making a difference in their communities and helping girls and women find a true love of sport.”

The annual WISE Fund grants primarily support female participation and leadership at all levels, as well as recognize and encourage organizations currently offering and/or creating new sport programs targeted to girls and women. This year’s recipients include nine organizations, two coaches and one official.

For detailed bios of the grant recipients, please visit the CAAWS website at http://caaws.ca/e/grants/wise/winners/recipients_12.cfm.

4. ON THE MOVE IN ETHNIC COMMUNITIES

Ontario Focus Group Sites Needed - CAAWS’ new On the Move in Ethnic Communities project is designed to enhance capacity at the community, regional and provincial levels to increase healthy living opportunities for girls and young women from ethnic communities. CAAWS is currently seeking 10 Ontario communities (across the four health regions) interested in hosting focus groups with girls and young women, and service providers, about the needs, interests and experience of the target group. A CAAWS facilitator will conduct the focus groups, and costs will be reimbursed by CAAWS. For more information please contact Tammy George, Project Coordinator at mastertg22@hotmail.com. 7. WALK IN HER SHOES 2012

Celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th by taking part in CARE Canada’s Walk in Her Shoes campaign. Join thousands of Canadians and challenge yourself to walk 8,000 steps a day for 8 days and raise funds to fight global poverty. In 2011, thousands of Canadians rose to the challenge and raised over $100,000 for the campaign.

Please join us this year and walk in solidarity with women and girls around the world who must walk an average of 8,000 steps a day to collect water, firewood and other basic necessities to keep their family alive. The 2012 campaign is bigger and better with the introduction of fun prizes and fundraising incentives.
