1. CAAWS PROGRAMS AT A GLANCE

Scholarship Application Period: Now Closed – The 2012 Stacey Levitt Women and Sport Scholarship application period is now closed. Thank you to all those who applied this year. CAAWS received over 500 applications from across the country. After a careful review of all submissions, CAAWS will be notifying candidates who have been shortlisted to the next stage of the selection process in July 2012. 2012 Stacey Levitt Women and Sport Scholarship recipients will be announced in August 2012.

CAAWS travels to the North – On May 24 and 25, CAAWS’ own Jennifer Birch-Jones, traveled to Yellowknife NT as part of a 2-day workshop series in partnership with the Sport North Federation. Jennifer facilitated two Addressing Homophobia in Sport: Making Sport Better workshops as well as the Conflict Resolution workshop, one of the five professional development sessions comprising CAAWS’ Women and Leadership Program. In addition, CAAWS trained facilitator Sheena Tremblay delivered the On the Move workshop as part of the workshop series.

Addressing Homophobia in Sport: Making Sport Better – This month, staff members from Sport Canada participated in CAAWS’ Addressing Homophobia in Sport workshop lead by Jennifer Birch-Jones, CAAWS Project Lead and Consultant, and Dr. Guylaine Demers, CAAWS Board Member and Professor at Laval University. The Making Sport Better workshop aims to raise awareness and educate sport leaders to better understand the issues around homophobia in sport, providing participants with an opportunity to really understand what homophobia is and the important role Sport Canada personnel and leaders can play in making sport more accepting of sexual diversity.

Moving, Mentoring, Motivating Mothers – CAAWS recently delivered its final workshops of a 13 cross-Ontario workshop series as part of its Mothers in Motion (MIM) project. With funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, CAAWS’ MIM Master Trainers delivered workshops across the province between April and June 2012 – one for stakeholders and one for mothers - to mobilize communities to increase physical activity and healthy opportunities for mothers and their families.

Deemed a success, the workshops allowed the participants to share physical activity and sport challenges and opportunities specific to mothers and their families, to network and to discuss collaboration and local action to make a difference in the lives of mothers and families in their community. Workshop sites across Ontario included: Sturgeon Falls, Tyendinaga, Owen Sound, Brantford, Petrolia, Ottawa (2 different sites / 1 French, 1 English), Sioux Lookout, Terrace Bay/Schreiber, and Toronto (4 different sites).
