EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
In the workplace, effective communication is the foundation
for better job performance and relationship building. Strong
leaders understand the importance of their personal brand
and can identify the communication style necessary in a variety
of situations. It is also becoming more important to follow
electronic communication and social media etiquette, and learn
how to avoid common pitfalls.

4. Gender Equity in London 2012
At the Opening Ceremonies of the London Olympics, IOC president
Jacques Rogge said that the 2012 Games signified “a
major boost for gender equality.” However, two new studies
examine the real state of gender equity at the Games.
- A study
released by the University of Toronto’s Centre for
Sport Policy Studies argues there is still some way to go
to achieve gender equality in the Summer Olympic sports.
Primary concerns include the fact that there were 30 more
medal events for men than for women, and that the quota
for women competitors were lower in 11 of the 26 sports.
In all, there were 1233 more men than women competing in
the 2012 London Olympics.
- A study
released by the SHARP Center (a collaboration between the
US Women’s Sports Foundation and the University of
Michigan) provides additional insights into the generally
poor representation of women in participation and leadership
roles in the international and U.S. Olympic and Paralympic
organizations, assessing the extent to which these organizations
are fulfilling their stated missions with respect to gender
equality.
5. Around the Rings Launches Golden
25 for Women
The first Around the Rings’ Golden 25 for Women was launched on International
Women’s Day on March 8th, recognizing thought-leaders
and personalities worldwide who impacted the Olympic Movement
in 2013.
6. 2013 Federal Budget Continues
to Support Sport
On Thursday, March 21st 2013 Finance Minister Jim Flaherty
released the government’s Economic Action Plan. The Harper government continues to support
the sport, physical activity and recreation sector philosophically
and financially. There were no cuts to the overall budgets
allocated to high performance sport. The Budget promised investment
in infrastructure including recreational facilities, and other
community infrastructure. The government removed import tariffs
from sports and athletic equipment, helping to bring down
the cost of sports and athletic equipment for all Canadians.
