KARIN LOFSTROM WINS MEDAL

Karin Lofstrom, ParticipACTION committee member and Executive Director of CAAWS, receives a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal from ParticipACTION.

ParticipACTION, the national voice of physical activity and sport participation in Canada, was invited to take part in the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal Program. As a partner organization, ParticipACTION was asked to coordinate the nomination and selection process to award 55 outstanding individuals and volunteers working within the field of physical activity promotion, to receive the commemorative Diamond Jubilee Medal. ParticipACTION is pleased to announce that Karin Lofstrom has been awarded a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medals are awarded to individuals who have distinguished themselves from others through their achievements and sustained contribution to their field. “Each recipient was chosen by a selection committee of prominent Canadians in the physical activity sector,” says Kelly Murumets, President and CEO of ParticipACTION. “The presentation of this Medal is a tribute to the dedication, passion and commitment that has been made to getting Canadians more active and ultimately contributing to a healthier nation.”

ParticipACTION received Medal nominations for approximately 200 individuals from across Canada. All of the people nominated have dedicated their time and talents to the physical activity, sport and recreation sectors and have contributed in a significant way to making physical activity a priority within their community or within the country. They included teachers, coaches, researchers, advocates, health care professionals, among others. Many have spent their professional careers dedicated to getting Canadians active, while others were volunteers with an interest and passion in working in their communities, provinces or nationally. Those chosen are among a select group whose contributions were deemed outstanding in their field and will leave a legacy that will benefit future generations in Canada.

Karin Lofstrom, ParticipACTION committee member, is the Executive Director for the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS). For more than 27 years, Karin has been an active participant, volunteer, leader, mentor and advocate for girls and women in sport and physical activity, both in Canada and internationally. Prior to working with CAAWS, Karin held a number of positions as coach, national team coordinator, chef de mission, administrator and manager across a range of sports and major international events. Karin’s commitment to achieving gender equity in the Canadian sport system is shared through her collaborative approach. At the national level, she contributes her experience in the sport sector and expertise on gender equity to a number of committees and working groups, sharing resources and knowledge to ensure the needs of girls and women are considered and integrated from the beginning into resulting programs and initiatives. “I’m happy to see Karin being recognized for her contribution, she is dedicated to promoting physical activity and sport across Canada and continues to work on leveling the playing field for girls and women” says Moira Lassen, CAAWS Chair.
