Mothers of School-Age Children

Active Living

How can I help my school-aged child learn to work with others?

Children need to exercise. It helps their brains and muscles to expand. It’s also a lot of fun!

The school years are marked by strong outside influences (from school, friends, advertising, etc.). This is a time when many kinds of physical activity, especially sport activities, are introduced to children. These activities offer children a way to learn about how people work together.

Teamwork is something that is best learned in sports where rules exist and each player brings their own strengths to the team. Growth and development differ in each child, so there will be a wide range of sporting ability between the early and late developers. That is why team-focused physical activities are so good for this age group. The slower developers get some satisfaction from their team’s success and the faster developers realize that they need other team members to truly compete and win as a team.
