OPENER TO SLOVAKIA

The Canadian women's national basketball
team dropped the opening game at the World Slam Down Under in Sydney, Australia today to
Slovakia, 56-46.
Canada started the game tentatively and struggled offensively. They fell behind 27-14 by
the end of the first the half.
The Canadian squad kicked it into gear in the second half executing more effectively at
the offensive end of the floor.
Tammy Sutton-Brown, Markham, ON, led the Canadians with 11 points and five boards. Shawna
Molcak, Cardston, AB and Nikki Johnson, Niagara Falls, ON followed with six each. Dianne
Norman pulled down eight rebounds.
Canada had 15 turnovers compared to Slovakia's 20.
"It's our first game together as a team after only nine practices," said
head coach Bev Smith. "We were rusty in the first half on offence though we competed
on defence. In the second half of the game we showed that we are competitive when we play
hard offensively and defensively."
The Canadian women play against their host, Australia tonight at 9:30 p.m. EST.
