The Globe and MailAustralian
women's basketball team beats Canada 78-54
CANBERRA, Australia (CP) - Australia defeated Canada 78-54
Friday to sweep a three-game women's basketball series. Cal Bouchard of Aurora, Ont., led
Canada with nine points while Fredericton's Diane Norman had eight points.
Lauren Jackson scored 20 points for Australia.
"We showed character on defence - we took a stance and
stayed with them for the first half," said Canadian head coach Bev Smith. "The
Australian squad is a step ahead of us but we'll see where we are in September. We've
improved since we arrived in Australia and now we have a measuring stick."
The game was tied at 13 with 12 minutes remaining in the
first half. But Norman and Michelle Hendry of Terrace, N.B., had early foul trouble -
three each by the 7:49 mark - which frustrated the Canadians the rest of the way.
The Canadian women's team will continue their training in
July in Hamilton,.
