OLYMPICS ON HIGH NOTE

DARTMOUTH, N.S.--Canada's women's Olympic K-4 (kayak fours)
crew members savored some individual honors this weekend at the 2000 Canadian sprint canoe
championships.
Carrie Lightbound of Mississauga, Ont., veteran Marie-Josee
Gibeau-Ouimet of Lachine, Que., and Kamini Jain of Calgary were the winners in the K-1
200, K-1 500 and K-1 1,000 metre races respectively under mostly rainy conditions.
"It's really great for our team spirit to see the crew
do so well here," said Gibeau-Ouimet, currently recovering from a back injury.
"I was very happy to win the 500 metre race."
The Canadian women's K-4 traditionally fares well on
international waters. Gibeau, 28, was a member of the fifth place crew at the 1996
Olympics, was on the fourth place team at the 1998 worlds and took gold at the 1999 Pan Am
Games. The other crew member is Julia Rivard of Halifax.
Julia Marshall and Elizabeth Orton of Dartmouth took both
the K-2 500 and K-2 1,000.
World champion Caroline Brunet of Lac-Beauport, Que., and
her K-2 partner Karen Furneaux of Waverley were not at the competition. They are already
training in Sydney.
Competition was also held in junior, juvenile and midget
