SYDOR PEDALS TO A MEDAL AT AT MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLDS

SIERRA NEVADA, Spain--Alison Sydor and Roland Green, both of Victoria, won silver medals in the women's and men's cross country events respectively Sunday to conclude the world mountain bike championships.

In the women's 33.5 kilometre race, Margarita Fullana of Spain successfully defended her world crown clocking 2:07.42. Sydor, the 1996 Olympic silver medallist and pre-qualified for this year's Games, followed in 2:11:09 while Olympic champion Paola Pezzo of Italy was third at 2:11:56.

"A silver medal is a great achievement, so I'm very happy," said Sydor, also second last year and world champion in 1994, 1995 and 1996. "It was hard, and in the last lap I had a good fight with Paola. The last three kilometres my legs were cramping a lot so I had to be careful. It's an altitude race, and pace is so important."

Chrissy Redden of Campbellville, Ont., who skipped the European portion of the World Cup season last month, was seventh while Leslie Tomlinson and Patricia Sinclair, both of Victoria also cracked the top-20 finishing 14th and 17th respectively.

The World Cup season resumes July 1- 2 at Mont-Ste-Anne, Que.
